I´ve been playing around a little with OPS, importing and exporting OBJ-files, just to get some feel for how things work in OPS.Now I have some questions:

How do I delete things(parts)?

When I select a part of a model and press delete it disappears. I save the file and then reload it again and the part I deleted comes back again! How is that? How do I make it go away permanently?

How do I know where imported OBJs end up?

When I import an OBJ it usually ends up somewhere far from the original model that is already present and it can take some time to find the imported part.

Also, can I import without replacing/deleting an already present part?

If I have a part of a model selected and choose import, that part automatically disappears when the new part is imported.

Any help would be appreciated

/Robert

Robert, first select "File", "Open" and find the directory that the plane is in.

Before you open it you need to Right click the .SM file you want to open. Then select "Properties" at the bottom of that menu and make sure that the "Read Only" is not checked. If it is just click the check mark to make it disappear then click "Apply" If that is not the problem post back here.

No, it is not "read only".
What I found out after I wrote the post was the "delete LOD" command, so I used that to delete things. But I have a feeling that when I use that some other things than just the 3d model disappears, am I right?
Let me tell you that right now I´m just trying to get my 3d model I´ve done to show up in OPS and the game. I know nothing about the more intricate stuff you can do with OPS (actually making a flyable aircraft).

greetings/Robert

"I save the file and then reload it again and the part I deleted comes back again!"

You dont need to save the file before reload cause Reload does this for you...Deleting parts works fine for me so I dont know whats wrong.

"When I import an OBJ it usually ends up somewhere far from the original model that is already present and it can take some time to find the imported part."

For the positioning thing - read Bryan Russels doc ! http://www.fightersquadron.com/opstudio/

"Also, can I import without replacing/deleting an already present part?"

Just copy the part (name --> name1) and replace the copy with your object.

"What I found out after I wrote the post was the "delete LOD" command, so I used that to delete things. But I have a feeling that when I use that some other things than just the 3d model disappears, am I right?"

I think no - when you delete only the LOD all the properties (inertiaBoxes, DOF´s...)and the sm-structure are still there. But I´m not sure...

what is the base object you worked with ?

Thanks Laika!

The thing is that if I select a part of an existing .sm plane , say the tailwheel on the He100 and reload, the tailwheel is gone as it should. But, if I import an OBJ, and then try to delete that part, reload, it´s still there. Strange. Or perhaps not, it´s just me doing something wrong.

"what is the base object you worked with ?"

I don´t think I know what a base object is.
Do you mean which .sm file I import to, what part of it or something else? (You can tell that I´m new at this, huh?)

I will read Bryan´s tutorial.

Thanks for the answers /Robert

I mean what sm file you are workin on (He100 ?).

Strange - "The thing is that if I select a part of an existing .sm plane , say the tailwheel on the He100 and reload, the tailwheel is gone as it should." Did you mean select or delete ?

OK - maybe this will help - rename the new part in your modeller exactly to the name of the old part (Tailwheel or rightWing or whatever) and then import it to OPS WITHOUT selecting any part of the plane. When all is right you should get something like "Import LOD : Importing Object "tailwheel" to Model "tailwheel"
Now push the reload button and the imported object should be there, select it and delete it and reload. Now it should be gone.

I tried it as I described it here and it works for me. I´m using the latest OPS Version (1.2.0).

Laika!

Oops, I meant "delete the tailwheel".Sorry.
Yes, right now the Heinkel is the model that is being submitted to my experiments.

I´ll try your idea.Thanks.
