IŽm a bit confused - somewhere I read that SDOE smoothes every object/lod with normals. Is that true ? (so I dont had to apply smoothing in 3ds or whatever prg ? )thanks !

I think you still need to smooth it out bro. If you dont, then you will see sharp edges and you may even see discoloration between the edges of the quads. After messing with this smoothing/welding stuff for a while, I kinda figured out what to do. Any faces that give you trouble need to need to be detach and then reattached and re-welded. Im not sure what this does but i helps out. Also, attach all the parts..the front fuselage to the back... the inner wings to the outer..etc,etc., and then weld the vertices. It will provide a smoother surface when you are done. JT is better at explaining this stuff than I am, but that is my take on it dan IP: Logged |

huh ?So I got 2 objects : the inner wing (leftWing) and the outer wing (LWTip). I attach them - ok - weld the vertices - ok - but now I didnt got my leftWing and LWTip lod anymore - so I select all faces of the outer wing and copy them and delete the selected faces (and the unused vertices) - now I got 2 objects again. Is this the way ? Keep in mind I dont use 3ds MAX - only got the old 3ds dos version. IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. Thats what i was wondering too. then you will only have one wing instead of an outside and inside IP: Logged |

Laika, the technique described in my recently posted tutorial will fix most shading problems. Whatever you're using to model, the premise is the same.... smoothing will be applied to surfaces that have welded verts. In order to create the smoothing effect, surfaces must be gradated gradually. This creates wierd effects if applied to surfaces that come together like a knife edge. From the screenshot of your wing, it looks like it's trying to smooth the edge where the wing meets the flap. Follow my tutorial to fix this (follow it in premise, if your modeling software is different). Also, is there a cap on the end of the outer wing where it meets the innerwing? It looks like it's trying to smooth that edge as well, but it's tough to tell from a screenshot. IP: Logged |

Yes there is a cap on the outside of the wing parts (for the damage texture). I always wonder why the left wing is shaded correct...It seems IŽll never understand what my 3d modeller is doinŽ there - I try to rebuild the wrong shaded faces - maybe this could help.IP: Logged |

Laika, The way the default planes are built in SDOE, there are no caps on the ends of parts. The damage lods appear and cap stuff when something falls off. If the end of your inner wing is capped, and the verts that connect the cap to the wing are welded, it will try to smooth that over... thus the gradation approaching the seam.IP: Logged |

Just to clear up your original Q Laika, SDOE does smooth the object using normals, the catch is that you need to set the normals properly in MAX so SDOE gets it right.I'm finding MAX a very fickle thing, that likes to play mind games with me. I used to be able to simply select two objects and the smoothing transition was fine, now its not. I think I'll be giving JT's weld and smooth a go. IP: Logged |

Seems there is a lot of trial and error work in front of me IP: Logged |

JT - since I removed the caps all is fine again !IP: Logged |
