I welded all the vertices on these two parts at .001 then exported to .obj. Why is this happening. Both of these wing pieces were painted white, but for some reason, no matter what I do, the inside part of the wing is always different from the wing tip. What gives? IP: Logged |

ya, thats what I get when I make something in AC3D......... which reminds me... I forgot all about that post!....... anyways. I tried flipping the normals, but it didn't work. Going to check the other post now. ------------------ Cheers! Jaguar The FS Hangar IP: Logged |

Dan, Try attaching the outer wing to the inner wing in Max using the "Attach" button and weld all the verts. Then, export out without normals and then import back in without normals. Next, detach the outer wing using "Detach" and texture both wings. Finally, export to OBJ with normals. IP: Logged |

Forgot how to detach again....just go into subobject mode...grab all the vertices from the outer wing..select detach and pull them apart right?IP: Logged |

No, face mode.IP: Logged |

Oh yeah, the other thing... One thing I can see is it's trying to smooth the edges where the wings are sliced and turn into the flaps and ailerons... not the top or bottom surfaces but the hidden ones that are perpendicular to the wings and flaps.... the faces that are only visible when the flaps are down. Detach and then reattach those on both the wing and flap, but don't weld any verts after that. IP: Logged |

Well, since I can't move parts and rotate in OPS what I have been doing is:Do all the import/export and welding and hiding triangles on each piece. When I am done with this I save each piece as a max file. Then I open up the max file(say, the wingtip for instance) and Import the piece I want to paint ( the inner wing). Since I cant move the inner wing (since it will be out of place in OPS), I move the outer wing and line it up with the inner wing as close as I can. Then I texture map the inner wing. When Im done with that I delete the wing tip (the piece I moved) and then export the piece i just textured(the inner wing) and export to OPS. This technique works, but as you see I have the smoothing problem. I will try to attach tonight. I figure that I can move the pieces as long as I dont rotate them on any of the XYZ planes. After I'm done the Script should move them back to the original X spot(hopefully) One the flaps and ailerons, Im just not gonna weld anything at all, it shouldn't affect any visible edges, plus a little discoloration is good anyway on those parts.

Think of it thise way.... where ever verts are welded, smoothing will be applied. Even if the surfaces come together like a knife blade, it will try to make it look rounded, which ofcourse yields bizzare results. On any surface where you don't want smoothing, detach faces then reattach them, but don't weld. IP: Logged |
