When I try to import my obj files (with texture) to OPS (V1.0.0) the following error comes up and OPS crashes:

OPENPLANESTUDIO verursachte einen Fehler durch eine ungültige Seite

Could this be a texture related problem -some days before I imported untextured obj files sucessful (I still dont know in wich folder I should put the tif files) What should I do with the mdl files? Are they necessary for anything ?

I tried some things already but nothing worked.

Please help !

Hmmm - after reading 5438276 topics here I think it could be the old OPS version - A "all in one" doc would be useful...donwload is finished - another try (or 10)

You need to center the object on the origin (coordinate 0,0,0) before you export for it to behave properly inside of OPStudio.

thats not my problem TS (not yet.. 8-O) - I moved the wing in this position just for the snapshot...

this things went wrong somehow:

- false scale in 3dmax (but I did this as a test some days ago and everything was fine - not really a problem)

- no textures on my imported wing lod (btw - what means L O D ?) I think I had to change something in the asc file to get this workin but I dont know what(I´m not familiar with OPS and that kind of work - It seems I have to learn this in the next weeks )

Everytime when a problem appears I do this:

1. thinkin "...already read this somewhere..."

2. read all the docs and helpfiles

3. trying things out (nothing works)

4. read it again

5. another try - another error

6. get confused

7. search all topics in the forum

8. more trying and more confusion

9. askin dumb questions in the forum

...this takes alot of time...

(When someone knows all about OPS and texturing and modelling and good sources for FM data - he could build a plane in 2 weeks. I´m afraid it could take months for me to finish the I-16.)

Don't give up.. have a look through the discussion threads on here called "texturing in 3dsmax", It's got information on all the problems I ran into.

LOD stands for Level of Detail.

It looks like your import is going ok, I can't say why the scale is off, perhaps there is a scaling option in your export plugin for max? Worst case you can just scale up all the objects in max.

Re: textures not showing up, it could be the .obj export plugin you are using is not exporting them, or you have not turned on the option to export them. Do you get an options screen that pops up when you export from Max? What options are there?

It took me two weeks of dumb questions to get texturing working : (

Laika,

The scale is probably to do with the scale option on the MAX2OBJ and/or the scale you have used for the actual mesh im MAX.

SDOE uses a scale or 1 Unit = 1 Foot. If you do this in max then you will need a value of 1.0 for the vertex scale ( I think thats what its called) in the MAX2OBJ dialogs.

For the OBJ import to get textures, and colours and alpha (transparency) )you will need to export a material file. As tailsdlide has said have a look at his threads about textureing I have posted my OBJ2MAX dialogs there which work. If you are using OPS B1.1.1 it might be mandatory to struture the names of the MAX materials. I wasn't supposed to be but it might be a problem. It's probably a good idea anyway since alot of SDOE relys on correct material assignement to do the collision detection thing. You should structure the names like:

&metal_00

where metal is a name of one of the standard OpenPlane materials, and 00 is the polygon flag value you want (in hexadecimal).

...a friend of a friend got 3dmax at work and I can use it there - but only for short times so I dindnt got the time to figure things out. I build the model and do the textures in 3ds dos and then make a number of phonecalls and get maybe 30 minutes to work with 3dmax - thats the way it goes. I use the MAX2OBJ plugin for MAX V2.x and OPS V 1.0.3 and export the model with Bryans options in the export plugin.

It was a bit late yesterday, so maybe it was a bug in my head - I didnt mind the script - maybe this was wrong...

thanks ! I keep trying.
