Again a texture question - I actually doin the texture stuff but I wonder wich size the final tif should have. Should I use the "normal" 256x256 size or can I use any texture size I want ?

I really need a answer for this cause I dont wont to do things twice and end up in a mess.
(allready searched for it in the forum but cant find it - but I´m sure I read somwhere something about this )

The second problem is the airfoil thing - the list at "incomplete guide to airfoils (or so)" showed me a TsAgi R-II 16% for the I-16 but when I search at the site where the data sets are, I find only two sets - the TsAgi 8% and TsAgi 12%. Did someone know what the percent stands for ? What is TsAgi R-II and can I find a similar airfoil somewhere (NACA ??) ??? I really dont know anything about this stuff - looks like alot of mathematics - yuugh

I hope someone can help !?

All the texture "paint jobs" I've worked with so far have been 256x256, but the "high res" Lightning art is made up of several .tifs, so I'm pretty sure you could use a 256x256 and then only cover the fuselage with it, for example, and then use another 256x256 for the wings (which would get you better detail I would guess).

Some of the other .tifs, like the tires, etc, are much smaller than 256x256, so I don't think the size is critical. It may be more a case of larger .tifs requiring more memory and taking up more space?

My SE5a uses 1 256x256 tif for the wings and 1 256x256tif for the fuselage, wheels, etc. Keep in mind that video cards can only keep so many textures in memory, so if you overdo it and the user puts many planes in the air - some textures will go away. This results in such strange things as blocky flak, blurry cockpits, and a terrain textured with a p38 skin! (ok the last one might have been a bug)

Supported texture sizes are: 256x256, 128x128, 64x64, 32x32, and 16x16.

You can make your tif any size - it will be scaled to fit one of the above squares. I stick to an exact square to keep my sanity.

Thanks for the texture answers - ok when I started up the work on that small plane I allways got in mind not to "overdo" it and keep the polycount low (around 620 now) so I´ll try to use only one 256x256 tif file without losing texture quality.

The airfoil and FM thing makes me a bit nervous....

Heya,

The less textures you have to load the better. Its a compromise between detail and
frame rate. While all a/c actually use many tiff's, most plane use only 1 tiff for fuse, wings, rudder and elevators. This seems to just fine. While for me more detail is great, 1 262x256 texture is fine. In the right hands you'd be surprised at the detail achieved.

Also not everyone has vid memory to handle alot of textures.

Just a side note:
I have seen some planes and objects textured with scans or color plates. To me these always seem to have a flat appearence. So I'd say its much better to make you own textures.

Good luck,
