Hi guys!

I've been following your work on building all the new planes for the SDOE community! Great work!

I believe the most difficult task is the testing and tweaking for a realistic FM. I was wondering if it would be possible to make a simple program to aid in the tweaking.

This could be built on an Excel sheet, for example. You type in the necessary FM data, and the program calculates and draws performance/altitude graphs. For example top speed, roll rate, turn rate, climb rate, stall speed, etc. And even better, maybe you could type in the performance you want, and the program would suggest needed values for the FM.

Just a wild guess, but the Parsoft gang MUST have a similar program, I don't think they're so crazy they'd do the FM's "manually". Any chance of pointing the flashlight here, Mr Harrison?

I'm not a programmer, but if someone is, and finds this kind of stuff interesting, maybe this person would like to do such a program?

What do you think about all this?

Spanky here...

Boy this sounds like a good idea. We need at least somthing to help with the FM department. We are getting new tools and learning how to do alot of stuff but the FM is still just a whole lot of hard work. I can't see it ever being a 5 minute job for a kick ass FM but a small kick in the right direction would help alot of people I'm sure.

Actually, a wind tunnel program is something I've had on the back-burner for a long time now. At the moment, we do load the planes up into the game and test their performance out. The big difference is that we also use the debug version which allows the display of lift and drag vectors and error reporting that isn't part of the release version.

One thing I've added recently is some data logging code that allows me to capture airfoil data in real-time and save it to disk after the program exits. I can then take the data and drop it into an excel worksheet to produce graphs.

Hi Michael, thanks for shining the light on this matter. That flight data logger would be a huge step in the right direction. Any change of releasing it, along with the Excel sheets?

A wind tunnel program is actually a good word for the final test bed I suppose it would "simulate" the athmosphere at different altitudes and then draw the graphs, based on the airfoil values?

How far are you with the developing of the tool, something more than a glint in your eye?

Thanks for the info!
