Gmax is available for download. Gmax is a stripped down version of Studio max with a emphasis on modeling for gaming. Best of all, it's free Check it out here: http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/gmaxconsumer/

Update: I downloaded it and installed it and discovered the following:
-It only saves in .gmax format. It doesn't even save it in .3ds.
-They have to write a "Game Pack" for a specific game in order for you to create models for that game. I submitted SDOE as a suggestion, but what are the chances of getting it.

have you tried installing the plugins Max2Obj and Obj2Max to see if you can export obj format? It realy doesn't matter what format it saves in since we can't use them anyway, but if it will export obj then all well.

I'll d/l it and see for myself.

Thanks for the link!

Yep, I tried that. The plugins that they use are a different format than 3DS Max. I doubt we will be able to use this piece of software

WOW its actually out now?

Cool stuff I thought it was just a pipe dream.

I'm going to go check what it supports.

This is a great idea, I just hope game companies use it.

Its a great way to learn max too (if its similar enough) for people that don't want o pay for the full version.

I always knew it was tied to the game though. They don't want to to be able to do anything with it.

Maybe we could get the patch guys to write something to convert for us or add the implementation to the game?

Wow I just checked it out and its looking pretty much the same as the full version except for the way it ONLY handles Gmax files.

It kinda sucks that it can't even import other file types, so you can't even bring in a plane you made in another program or bring in something someone else has made.

At the very least it gives people a look at max and what it can do. And could be great for future modeling stuff.

Maybe the IL-2 guys can add support for it.
