Just had this idea rolling around my head for a while. Would it be - and could it be - possible to have parts of a plane refering to an external file (.sm), so we are sure a same element would have identical behavior between planes. For example: HispanoSuiza cannon used on Spit Ib and Vb. This is a pure "light" example, just try to figure it with better examples yourself, I'm too tired at the moment. ------------------ P/O STef simGazettes.com editor IP: Logged |

We already have this in WW1. The vickers and Lewis guns are done this way, and it works very well. Likewisethe German Spandau. There is a guns directory, with the gun and textures in. You want a lewis gun, just paste in a referenced model. It really is a good idea for any component that is used in this way. Where a part isn't modelled, this has less effect. Guns effectiveness is set in the ppf file, not in the model, so the values can't be controlled in this way. If it's visible, though, this works well. IP: Logged |

I've thought about bringing this up with Razer about his drop tanks. That way we can assign an empty weight, stick a cyl airfoil on them and have them create drag and burden the FM. I think the P-40, P-38, P-51's and P-47 could all share the file.IP: Logged |

Actually...the more I think about this, the more useful it seems.Look at the number of WW1 planes using those lovely spoked wheels SV did.....and the control column we did for the Taube... If we use a similar approach to the stock gauge selection, we could have a whole library of stock parts builders could reference in. This could include gun pods, drop tanks, antenna, etc. anything that doesn't need to be mapped to a plane specific skin, but might be useful on more than one plane. I think building a list of useful items would be a good start! Get the list together, then we can build them! IP: Logged |

There are some issues I ran into trying to do this. First, if your item will be used more than once on the same plane (like 2 guns, or 2 wheels), you must create TWO seperate sm files with different names. That is why there is a spandau and spandau2 for example. This is not too big a deal though.I forgot the other issue, but it caused me to abandon externaly referencing the wheels... I will try to remember the issue... maybe there was a work around or the issue ony effected something else I was trying to accomplish. ------------------ -Sv Wings with Wires IP: Logged |

What about building the individual instruments for the panel, each as a .sm file? It would sure make panel building easier (at least for the standard instruments). This has been mentioned before and never shot down... I know it would take time to do, but it would free up so much more time once it was done. (Or did I miss something that makes this impractical....)------------------ Snickers =FC= Thou shalt maintaineth altitude, lest the earth rise up and smite thee. IP: Logged |

The P40 (thanks to pachy) has all the needles set as the child of the gauges. It's a simple copy and paste to get the gauges into a new cockpit (example my P-39 now has new gauges) I have a P51 panel in an SM file but the gauges aren't setup yet. Just never got around to finishing it off. as long as the tifs were int he cockpit folder you could copy and paste with OPS and you wont' have to change anything but the aircraft name in the gauges.

This would save Soooooooooo much time and go quite a long way towards making that part of building a plane less painfull.... BTW - Can I have the latest copy of your P39... ------------------ Snickers =FC= Thou shalt maintaineth altitude, lest the earth rise up and smite thee. IP: Logged |
