how do i use this program on the .tif files so they're editable in a viewer?

Get this:
http://www.irfanview.com

It can untiff, and even batch un-tif

It will let you view compressed tiffs as well - and as a bonus, you can also view the 24 bit BMP SDOE screen shots - Photoshop chokes on those...
