Yes, hacking into the par files seems like the best way to do it, unless you have an sm of a ground object ready to use. One thing you might find handy (and only if you have enough disk space) is if you make some new folders in the media folder called "Data1", "Data2", "Data3" and so on. Then unpack the respective par files into them, and keep them there. You'll find the unpacked contents easy to access when you need them at a later date.
Just make sure you DON'T unpack the par files directly into the SDOE media folder!! This will possibly unpack older version files over your existing media\ folder structure and possibly screw everything up.
If you're after making some new racing pylons, you can simply unpack the existing ones from the pars, and just get the original GMC Fuel ground object and you're away!
