I've seen some of the lighter terrain people are doing, and I'm wondering if that can't be the standard?

I don't know what it looks like on other machines, but on my TNT2 I can't see planes over the ground or water - they totally disappear because there's not enough contrast.

What do you all think of this?

Press SHIFT + to brighten up SDOE while in game.

Interesting! Is there a way to have this set by default?

Umm, shift plus what? Shift and the plus key didn't do anything for me.

Get SDOE Control and click on the Enviornment tab. Now you can play around with the Gamma and Infinite light. Once you make your changes they will stay that way until you change them back.
This is also handy when you fly Night missions!

also a good thing to remember is this... at best the smallest you will get a terrain texture is 19mb, add that to the already far to big PP download and us pore modem users are just made to suffer more, and also, since it doesn't affect online compatability and is a personal preference they shouldn't be in the plane pack anyway realy.

As a matter of fact, the terrain SM isn't even checked for online play.. I remember what I laugh I had watching Spyder fly through some mountains I put on Rhineland once... thing is, I couldn't do the same LOL

Shift plus +- is for controling gamma, It used to work for me but not last time i tried it, and i didn't change vid cards, So I think its tied to Gamma.

BTW wouldn't not being able to see a plane against the ground mean its camo paint job is working?

Heh, good try, but I can't see green planes over blue water! :-)

Really, I don't know what this is like on other machines, but unless it's against the sky I can rarely see other planes.
