I am trying to learn OpenPlane/Rhino by creating self-propelled gun. I have limited myself to the superstructure so far. I have two questions.

1. Do individual items have to be created discretely? For example, do the gun barrel and/or mantle have to be created separately and assembled in Ops, etc. I have seen discussions/examples where the orientation of parts brought into Ops were problematic.

2. How are tracks handled? I am assuming that they are static. Specifically, the wheels and treads are not animated. Is this correct?

Thanks

Bob

For a first effort, I would suggest keeping it simple. In practice, you can do a lot of things with OpenPlane, but it can get very complex!

A simple model will be easier to start with.

As to the parts thing.

You can build it as one object, or you can build it as seperate parts. Obviously, if you intend the gun barrel to move, it must be seperate. It is pretty much down to you. Problems with imported parts pointing the wrong waycan happen. Usually, though, the awkward ones happen with plane wings etc. If you change the phyical model, and don't change the physics, you can end up with a wing that doesn't work properly!

Most of this won't happen in the SP you want to build!

Also, the best thing to do, before you start building, is to take a close look at the existing ground units. Check out a few models of the stock items, and have a look at Scorpion Rouge's site. It was mentioned in General a few weeks back. He has made some very nice ground units. Look at the way they have been built, and use that as a guide.

Good Luck!
