Rendsburger- got enough room for Linux on your HD? The Gimp is better than photopaint (which I have) and almost as good as Photoshop.

Gimp runs under Windows also! Linux is not mandatory here.

It is not really user-friendly, but very powerful.

Every single texture I have done for SDOE (probably over 500 now including all the cockpits) was done using various versions of Paintshop Pro (now v7, I think). I tried Photoshop and found it way too feature rich for my needs. Alpha channels are handled very well in PSP as are layers.
