Its been quite some time since Ive messed with it...but do I just use the AC3D transparency slider to set the transparency of a face in sdoe?

I know transparent tiffs have a different number in front of them, but I cant even get the lod to show up transparent.

Im using hippies tools to do the actually imporation.

What I do:

Add the new texture to the .ol file. Make sure the flag for the texture is set to transparent.

Now the actual texture tif file is the key, this must have an alpha chanel in it! This is created in photoshop when you open the channels window and "add new" channel. Now that chanel (like the RGB chanels) is grey scale. Black = transparent, white = opaque. Grey means semi-tranparent and take the color from the RGB chanels.

Now any LOD that you texture with that texture ID will be transparent!

OK...

So transparent LODS have to have a transparent texture on them?

Yup!

It's the texture that makes them transparent. That and the poly-flag. The flag really tells the engine that the texture has an alpha channel, the alpha channel makes the thing see-through.

No! They don't have to be textured! set texref = 0 to the relevant surfaces and set the mysterious (for me) LOD poly flags to some correct value, taking one of the original planes as reference. For example, the D.520 uses 4fff for transparent white.

The only thing is you can't use OPS to import the LOD as the import plugin does not support non-textured polys.

I think you can use the polys flags to make a solid color (texture ID=0) have an alpha setting, just like patchy said. So you could make a solid color transparent. I think the shipping aircraft use this for the canopies when viewed from the outside.

For alpha textures, you do NOT need to do anything with the poly flags. It is the TEXTURE FLAG in the .ol file that needs to be set in order to denote that the texture has an alpha chanel.

The only thing I use the poly flags for is sub-facing... shadows and other flush polys must have this set to avoid the flickering and cross-hatch look.

Alpha textures allow things to look much better of course, but I don't know the performance hit. Well, it will use more texture memory at least
