I've been throwing around the idea for awhile and I think I may have it all figured out.

Instead of having the model change with a part that has the damage scheme on it how about we cut the tops and bottoms off the wing and just import those parts has our damage. Now create a texture that just shows bullet holes and set it to be transparent. You could just set a small area of the wing to show the damage but it might be cooler with the whole wing. Now once thats done you can now have damage on every scheme for that plane without having to create a damage scheme for all of them.

Now, this could also show multiple damage effects if you can get it to display the different effects when obHit reaches a certain level. I think the engine DM already does this but not on a model level.

You could say obHit 5 unhide damage1 and then say obHit 13 unhide damage2.

I'm not a mega OP guru but i think it would work if you know how to set it up. As the damage goes on the damage on the wings gets worst leading to loss of the object or controls.

I had the idea from IL-2 and i think we can get it to work in SDOE we just wont have holes. I've yet to figure out a way to get holes to show up in a scheme without modeling them. (need this for the dauntless air breaks)

Does this sound like something that would hurt FR's and or cause problems while flying?

This could also go with the cool damage i've been playing with for parts like WW2 Fighters did with things sticking out.

Input please...

It's a very similar concept to the stuff Nat and I have been tinkering with. We have gone for actually modelling the stuff physically, with a frame work with an actual cover surface on top. Don't know which has a bigger impact on FR's....a big alpha texture, or some extra polys...

The transparent overlay approach will allow for gradual build up of bullet holes, which would be cool, so I reckon the best bet is to do both!

Build up bullet holes the way you have outlined, and when you hit big damage, unhide a new model. We have worked on ways of progressively degrading the wing surfaces, so that would fit in nicely too.

hmmmmmm more DM things to think about!!!

All you would need to do, is place a flat poly in the middle of the wing, textured to look like the inside of a wing. Transparent bullet holes from either side would give the impression of looking through to the inside of the wing structure

On the origianl planes, there is already an ideal poly in game. It's the lowest level LOD! All it needs is a new texture. And since it is probably already mapped, it's relatively easy to do. I'm going to have to try this out! Adding an Alpha texture to a copy of the wing panel and obmodelling it in at certain damage levels. The plan I originally had for wing damage involved an actual model of the spars, which you can unhide when the wing section is destroyed....oh yeah...the wing panels are not joined in the way they usually are on my DM project....they are child objects of a hidden support structure....which is why this has got me excited....the hidden structure would be made up of low level lod's ..... tweak the DM....no lining up hassles...DAMN ME THIS WILL WORK!

All the stuff I have been trying to do fits in too! It's perfect....

er.....I think I've just had a Eureka moment....
