Welcome to AC3D jgro!
Did you first import the aircraft into AC3D? Here are the basic steps:
1. Fins the .sm file for the aircraft you want to work with.
2. Use Hippie's SMD tools to extarct the aircraft into the .ol and .lod files.
3A: Import the entire aircraft using .ol import, point it to the .ol file you created in staep 1.
3B: Or... import the LOD you want to edit into AC3D using Hippie's LOD import plugin.
If you chose 3A, you must read Hippie's readme very carefully! This is a big hack to use Ac3D, but it is very clever! You need to play by the rules... and there are some bugs, but most things work fine. I do not use this method yet, except to test it and see how it works- I want to use it
If you chose 3B, things work perfectly. Just edit the LOD file in AC3D, or create a new one! Export it with the same LOD name when you are done. Then re-compile your sm file using Hippie's OLC tool, the new LOD will be in the game!

And ask all the questions you want here, sometimes it is faster just to ask- we don't mind answering
I love AC3D for OpenPlane... thanks to Hippie's tools of course
