All of the sudden, my FS shortcut logo turned into a stardard .exe icon. It still works, but if I look in my FS directory I now wee this:

Any ideas? I see the same bad file names in my MS Office directory!

Thanks for any help or insight... I did run regclean, no help...

I hate to tell you this Sv, but this is one of the problems with 98. This typically happens with a lockup where you have to reset the machine. The filenames get all screwed up and display hex symbols as part of the name. This is because there are too many broken chains, crosslinks, and lost clusters in the memory cache on the HD.

A lot of times you can't even delete the files in the directory that's screwed up using standard windows system tools.

Forget about going to DOS, that won't work either. Run scandisk for windows and tell it to automatically fix any errors or you'll be there all day telling it yes. This may not fix it to the point where you can delete all of the files either.

You'll keep hearing this from me with 98 problems- get SystemSuite 3.0 and run the clean up utilities WEEKLY under 98. I've had it fix problems Norton choked on. A friend of mine was able to use it to recover over half of his files corrupted by the Melissa virus over a year ago. It's the only product outside of a data recovery lab I've heard of that was capapble of doing this. It even comes with a data recovery utility that might help with some of these files.

Anyway, once you're done, delete the directory. If it won't let you delete all of the files, you can limp along by reinstalling Fighter Squadron. But be forewarned, running with a directory full of trash can cause problems with your system. On a hard lockup, it may, or may not, make your system unbootable.

If you can't delete the whole directory, the only solution is a reformat and reinstall of everything- yuk.

This is why Windows is now a gaming system for me. I've moved all but one of my productivity apps to Linux (Mandrake7.2), and both of my machines are dual boot.

Go to www.ontrack.com and see if they have a demo of Fix-it-utilities or SystemSuite. That may help.

Unfortunately, I've seen this problem numerous times on 98 machines, sorry I couldn't help out more.

And they want to create a gamebox off this OS?!?!
