Yep, I need help! If Hippie is about, please can you advise me on this.

The problem:

Run SMD, import model into ac3d.

Import new lod's to replace old model parts

export OL with new name....oldnameXX etc.

run OLC and build new SM

o.k. Fine so far!

Run in game....DOF's now completely screwed. Worst affected are the ailerons. Props seem o.k. most of the time. Gun turrets also suffer. Not only are the DOF's now moved, but something odd is happening to the co-ordinates too. If you create a new DOF, and copy in the old values, it is still wrong! The only cure is to completely re-do the DOF from scratch. Move it into place, test...etc. etc. etc.

Now, if the model was radically different, I would expect this, but in my case, THE PARTS AFFECTED HAVE NOT BEEN CHANGED.

Question:

Am I doing something I shouldn't?

If I build a plane this way, is it no-longer compatible with OPS?

If so, do we have to get all the properties etc. done first and can then never change stuff in OPS?

Without these problems, the B17 update would be ready now! I kid you not. I have had to re-do so much every time, and have had to postpone a lot of stuff I wanted to work into it, just to avoid having to re-do stuff all over again, I will do it, just not right now. Cut'n'paste in OPS loses the positioning of the part, which means large amounts ofl ining up. I hoped OL would get around this, but it makes more work than it saves right now.

If there is a simple cure, I need to know!

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG! IS IT ME OR THE PROGRAM! AAAAAAAAaaaaaaaarrrghhh

It is not compatible with OPS right now, but see the "Sv's OpenPlane notes" post to read more about this...

read your post.....

You posted not 10 minutes after me, and I think we are talking the same language on this one!

If there is a fix, great.

If not, then cutting OPS out of the equation seems to make sense. The properties can be worked on from the OL file, just not as easy to 'see'

If Bryans OPS 2000 becomes available, I think OPS will pass into the realms of History anyway!

maybe OPS 2k will have DOFs support int he prop list, but now i just use OL for getting me to the LODs. I edit all the parts and build it back, i use OPS for FM, DOFs and thats it.

I know it's a pain...

The only way I've successfully DOF'd in OPS is by moveing both the parent object and the children that need to be DOF'd to their origins position the DOF then move it back to where the parent belongs. You rotate the parent at all after this and the DOF gets screwed again and your back to square one.

It's a bitch but possible.

Don't forget that you need OPS for intertia box editing.

And gun allignment.

so, in short.....OL is not going to offer anything more than Extractor did.

wrecking the DOF's makes OL real pain. It will work fine so long as the parts don't include too many DOF's. But what really confuses me is that it isn't all of them! Never had a problem with dials, no bother with props, landing gear is usually o.k.
Ailerons, rudders and elevators..no chance!

I think it must be to do with the model co-ords. If the part is centred relative to itself, and moved in OPS, then BOOM. If it is centred relative to the model origin..fine.

Don't really understand how it is working, so I hope Hippie picks this up and has a look at it! Crack this, and we have the best tool to work with AC3D!

It only dies when you use OPS too, right? OPS can not handle DOF's as text prop lists, but rather it only supports them in their binary form.

All Bryan needs to do is support prop list DOF's, right? Or are you suggesting that the OL tools have a DOF bug without using OPS?

I carried out some slightly more 'scientific' tests on a B17 model, and I mailed you with the results.

Looks like OPS isn't the problem!

If you need any more test data, just let me know!
