Did I read that right...We make the models, and if they are of a good enough standard, Oleg and his team build the FM and DM stuff, and release the m for FREE DOWNLOAD. The last two words being the crucial ones here! I would like to see how this would be worked, and some kind of commitment to it before I built a model. I know how much work is involved, and certainly wouldn't slave away to build something, only to find that it 'wasn't up to standard' It is also worrying to see '3D Max 3.1 only' for the modelling. Not everyone can afford to buy it, or get access to it though...er ...other channels as I had to. Can we exclude all the talented builders out there like that? Perhaps, if Oleg is concerned about FM and DM security ( which I understand ) would it not be better to release a set of 'generic' FM's which user add-ons could be built around. He could tweak any planes people thought good enough, to get the detail right, but at least we could play with things we built ourselves. That for me is the fun bit! Alternatively, why not release a 'plane builder' utility. FM could be input onto a table of required data, and the process of plane building kept locked up. If it's going to get hacked, it's going to get hacked! I would like to see something that could import textured 3D models, and built FM's from a set of data, and then crank out a model ready to roll. Surely Oleg has a means of doing it? I may be talking rubbish here......but to ask the community to do the modelling, with a sketchy offer to put them in-game if they look good enough and download for free whenever, seems a little like using us to improve the Sim for free without actually feeling you are part of the process. Don't know...... Still going to buy the game, coz I like the look of it, just don't see myself wanting to get invovled with it as I have with SDOE. Tinkering builds the community. That is a conclusion I have come to from most of the forums I post on. The desire to make a sim better. If the developer holds the reins, and only lets you do what he says you can do, that would only inspire me to crack the game wide open, and to hell with the developers! I don't have the skill to do that, by the way, but it sums up my reaction to the post on the IL2 forum. IP: Logged |

I agree. An Open game is very differnt from a game where the guy is nice and lets you help build his sim The key to an open sim is that it is a file format, not a tool set. This way the creation of the tools is part of the open system - so we can use AC3D or anything we want. Also, in the case of OpenPlane, we have full control of FM and DM too - this is as important as good looks for most people. Is IL-2 going to be using table driven flight models, or real physics? I like the terrain - so many models! And so well done too... IP: Logged |

Hey guys, well I got a little mail fro mOleg, basicaly just asking me to check his reply on the forum, well anyway, felt I had to mail him back ofcourse.. hell the mail kinda turned into an epic, but I tried to make a point that he's missing and hope in some small way he listens, the jist of it was this:I hope that IL2 works very well for you, it's very popular so far that much I do know, I'm sure that there will be quiet a few people that will want to build addons for it, but I must admit that although I can see your point of witholding the tools to add the DM and FM tools, I do also think that this will keep some of the best builders away from creating addons, the main reason for this is a simple one, we're all very vain and like to "brag" between each other about what we're doing or creating, but not being able to flight test our creations, infact, not even being able to make them fly at all will be a blow that most wont like. Myself I always build a basic model first, then put it in the game with a basic TMap, then for the next few weeks I'll do nothing but FM and DM work till I know it's flying like it should be, then I'll go back, and put a polished model and texture to it The point it, the greatest part of the creation isn't the model but that it flies like it should, to be believeble in the game, not that you're teamcouldn't do that, ofcourse they could, but the point about creating it, is that "I" want to make it fly. Basically that echoes what SV has said, it's almost like it's not our production is someone else puts the DM/FM to it, hell I hate people altering anything I've built, and I'm sure if your honest you'd all say the same, even if it is better than how you made it lol Lets hope he has a change of heart, but he seems hard set on this approach already. ~Nat~ IP: Logged |

Glad to see your fighting the corner Nat!I think we are all agreed on this one. We need to be able to play with it properly or not at all. Still intend to buy the game, just won't get involved quite so much. SDOE is a challenge. We make it do things that MH and his team never imagined, and that has to be a reflection of the size of the Team that is working on it! SDOE has a team of developers over 800 strong (us!). Sure think IL2 could use some of that! Good Luck Nat! If you need any help to make a point just shout! Oleg may listen more closely if he feels this is more than just a personal opinion.
