Hey guys, ok, I've looked through some online tutorials and not found what I need to know, so heres a Q for the Max peopole out there.Terrain.. I've built a terrain that it 40x40 miles using a patch and displacement map. The Q is, is there a way in Max to dice this patch up into equally sized parts without me having to do it all by hand? As always, any and all help is appreciated Thanks guys ~Nat~ ------------------ 7./JG3 "Naturlich" "SDOE... What and where would you like to fly today?" Nats FS-SDOE Site</B> IP: Logged |

Okay what you need to do is convert it over to an editable mesh for one. Then next thing you do is select all the polygons and use the "slice" tool. Then after you have sliced it all up go into the hierarchy tab and click on affect pivot pivot only and click on center to object and you should notice a couple of million pivot points pop up in the middle of all your "diced" tiles and then you can run the trusty ole max script to stack em all on top of each other and then there ya go...Answer your question bubby? Oh when you goto slice you will have to manipulate the slicer gizmo and get it lined up how you want it before you click slice you click the button next to slice first I can't remember off hand what it says but you'll know it. It's to the immediate left of the "slice" button.------------------ So many things so little time FarmerJoe [This message has been edited by FarmerJoe (edited 11-02-2000).] IP: Logged |

Hey thanks Joe, I tried what you said before, thought I needed the slice function, it gives me a gizmo box as you know, but I wasn't sure what size to set it, or how to "make" it slice.I'm gonna have another look now though cause maybe I missed something with not being sure that I was doing the right thing to start with. Your reply is a major help Thanks Joe! ~Nat~ IP: Logged |

No problem Nat...Okay here I will explain to you how it works...Where is says "user or left, right, top, bottom" in the viewport right click there and choose views then goto top view. Now select all the faces you want to slice then click "slice plane" button then hit the "sub-object" button and manipulate the gizmo...I think all you have to do is rotate it 90 degrees along the Y axis to get it to line up with the top viewport correctly then put the yellow line of the gizmo where you want to make the slice. After you have a "yellow line" going through the area you want sliced click on the "slice" button then click on the move tool and back those polys up away from the rest. Or a more simplified way is to use the detach tool. However you want to do it is up to you though man.------------------ So many things so little time FarmerJoe IP: Logged |

thanks Joe, that helps now.. lol, I was making the gizmo the size I want one tile and placing it flat against the terrain in top view.. lol no wonder it didn't work. What I was hoping for is a way to cut the complete terrain into 400 parts as if by making a grid over the whoile tile and then slicing it, but it sounds like the slicing tool wont do this and I may have to cut it up by hand using the detach method, and then centering the pivots of all the new objects, if thats the way it has to be it's a damn shame really, I was hoping Max might have the option to chop it up into mney parts iin one go, it would make things alot easier and more appealing to someone wanting to make their own terrain. Thanks for the help, I have found out some things that I needed to know so thats a good thing, the more I learn the better ~Nat~ IP: Logged | |
