Would it be possible (and if so how much trouble) to make the Island terrain as easy to use as Snowy Dover and Rhineland Winter? With those terrains mission creation is a snap and in fact is just as simple as the terrains that shipped with the game, even Midway is easy. The Island terrain on the other hand while unique and beautiful, is a bear to work with.

Any ideas for this?

Thanks

The "conversion" looks like it would be easy...but, thats what I said about a simple repaint of the Africa map. Damn airfields! If you plan on taking this on start at Nat's page and read his terrain tutorial, its a great start.

Oh and don't forget, the water isn't water!

And it has no airfields....

And having looked at Tundra with a view to putting airfields on it, it will be a pain!

The terrain is heavy on triangles, and very short on flat spaces. You would need to re-model any tile before you could build an airfield to go onto it!

Good Luck!!!!!

I made a little mission editor map for the Island terrain to make mission creation easier. The small area of the map (flying off the edges) and the fact that a lot of the water is actually land (around the island) are a definite disadvantage... but the terrain itself looks very good, especially with the new pacific planes and carriers.

I also put together a "Terrain Pack" to encourage use of the new terrains online... but the thing is HUGE. It's a parfile with Rhineland Winter, Snowy Dover, Dover Night, Island and Tundra terrains inside.

The Isalnd terrain has an Airfield. The problem with the Island terrian is it uses a Par file already in use (I think) and it is not recognised by the game as a real terrain. Or at least thats my laymans view of it. And because of that making missions and online use is very difficult to say the least.

It's a pretty cool Isalnd though, and it would be nice for some nice dogfight and carrier based missions, but currently it's not used. A shame.

I played with someone online using the island terrain not long after the first Corsair beta was released.
The problem is that the airfield is not a seperate object- instead, it's a part of the terrain. At least I think that's how it's set up. Since it's not a seperate airfield object, the AI (and mission editor) can't use it as an airfield.

An interesting note, regarding the island terrain:

The water around the island has funny properties in some places. For example, I placed 2 Corsairs in the wrong place, and they ended up on what looked like water, but they did not sink so it must have been land textured as water. The wierd thing is, when they started up, they were sending splashes everywhere as if they were in water. They couldn't take off, just kept going around in circles, splashing all about. I don't know if this "water" has different properties or what, but it might be of interest to those trying to work with water landings.
I have screenshots somewhere.

Is it just me or does the water need some depth added to it? What I mean is the water looks like a pastel. It has no life to it and it is very dull lookin. Shiness would be pimp as hell but I don't know how hard it would be to get it to tile up right. Just a thought though.

Reaperman...!!!!

SEND ME THAT MISSION!!!!!!!!!!!!

and post those screenshots. Tell me everything!

If this was a bug with the terrain- great!

That sort of bug I can use! The thing I want to know is whether those corsairs blew up or bounced about or did anything odd at all. If not, then I must know where you started them, so I can dissect the terrain.

That airfield, by the way, is just painted on from the sound of it. Airfields are unique beasts all there own! There secrest have been unlocked, and between those of us who have been looking at them, we pretty much know how to make new ones.
