I've got some shading problems - when exported from 3DS with max2obj some parts are shaded in OPS and FS, but most aren't.
In april you guys posted a lot regarding problems with not getting any shading of your objects. It seems you eventually managed to get it right but I can't exactly follow how you did?
As it's a ground object it would look ok if the parts were either all shaded or not shaded but now it just looks ugly. Is there perhaps a way to disable the shading instead?

Well, how did I get to work...Good question

I canīt remember exactly what it was I did that made it work really, but:

1.Make sure everything is set up correctly in the Max2Obj export and import dialogues. That is, that "Textures" and "Normals" are checked.

2.I always export and then import back to Max before texturemapping an object. That way I see if the object "survived" the exp/imp OK.

3.When adding an object that is mapped with a texture that isnīt used before in the sm.file, make sure you change the "flags", "texture ID", "distance" and "texture size" to correct values, otherwise it looks strange ingame.

4.I also found out that it helped to have only the object that I wanted to export in the Max-scene. When there were other objects there the exp/imp usually went bad. I know this sounds strange because I guess youīre supposed to be able to exp/imp multiple objects, but thatīs what I found.

Iīm not sure if this will help you, since you had problems with shading, not texturing, if I understood you right.

Iīm sorry if Iīm unclear, I find it hard to explain these things properly.
Please post again if you have more questions or if you get it to work.

Lycka till/Good luck

Sorry... I'm just swamped with school work now and haven't been able to really try out all stuff yet

On the other hand as I've already textured my object and it has about 20 different surfaces using the same tiff and is a real bitch to edit in the LOD files I would prefer not to try option 2 as that destroy's all texture mapping.

1 & 3 I'm pretty sure I've checked.

I haven't tried number 4 yet and I still have another idea to use. The thing is I have a complete working ground object with finished damage modeling and everything but it's built with triangles. This new version with about half the polys and which also is more detailed has two parts which get the shading, all others doesn't so I will probably export those triangleized(sp?) parts of the older model to my new version. That way I will get a completely 'non-shaded' object which I think will look ok. The strange thing is that it's nicely smoothed but that it doesn't get shaded...

Maybe if I could get the vrml-export to work it could be solved but it just mostly crashes for me or does strange things to my model.

If someone do find out how to fix shading of a textured model though please post it. When my 3D-model of my plane is finished I will definatly make sure it renders ok before texturing

Ahhh... back to all that homework and exams again...

Thanks for the tips! I will post if I get a nice breakthrough!
