I was just wondering how to make ships move because we have a lot of really cool ones that could steam around sluggin it out with you or each other. Now before I give my idea heres a question. Is there a limit to the speed and height an a/c can go? Can you make a plane fly at 20mph and at 10 feet? If so we could make a ship with a wing thats invisible to 'fly' really slowly around the place? I tried to get the a/c in the game to fly low but the lowest they would fly is about 140 feet and then they'd climb to whatever. So, ehh am I dumb or is this a good idea? Snake IP: Logged |

Ahh...water...I probably have tried most combinations of things to make stuff move in the presence of water, so here is the distilled wisdom of my experiences. YOU CANT DO THIS That aside, youcan cheat a little. Ships can be made to move by having a hidden object around which a DOF moves. If the ship is on the other end of the DOF, it can move in a limited way. The problem is, it will disregard the terrain etc. and follow it's pre-set movement. THis is OK unless you happen to have some land in the way....then it looks odd! There are drivable tanks that use exactly the same principle your thinking of, and yes it does work, but try putting a plane on water....sinks and blows up! If the object has inertia ( which it must have if you are going to drive it ) then you cannot float. Ships float through having no inertia. No inertia....no movement. Catch 22! You could try making the ships bob about a bit. That could be fun, especially for the Carriers.... IP: Logged |

Answer:By signing up for the Semi Open Source and making a new vehicle object for water. IP: Logged |

Pete Hawk knows how to do this I believe. Can't remember exactly, but it has to do with building some complex and long-running DOFs with a "hidden" parent ship object "launching" a child ship out on its course. Not sure if you could land on that ship, but I suspect you could bomb/torp it OK I think that since he first came up with this, someone has figured out how to initiate a DOF at mission start, too, so the vehicle should start moving immediately. I always forget to copy the posts that explain how to do this stuff...

Spanky here... Yeah a bobbing and heaving flight deck would rock. IP: Logged |

No I'm asying just make an /ac with a very low stall speed that flies very close to the water. Understand? Not actually touching the water but flying over it very lowdown.Or is it totally impossible? Thanks IP: Logged |

Hmmm... seems to me that one could a make a boat go in a nice circle, say a patrol around an island. Just make a hidden hub with a long hidden arm attached to the boat and assign it a rotational DOF around the hub and make it loop indefinitely. This should work, right? You could make an Exeter or two attached to one another by invisible rods that just circles an island as a patrol. If you got creative (and you guys are definately creative) I should think it would be possible to add another DOF that would vary the distance from the island using a piston of sorts. This would make the ship "zig-zag" on it's circular course simulating an attempt to be a difficult target. I would try this but I have zero knowledge and zero time at the moment.Just another idea... -Stark [This message has been edited by Stark (edited 10-16-2000).] IP: Logged |

Snake, I'm not sure the AI is good enough to fly very low and very slow without augering in. Let one follow you down to the deck. If you keep your plane just above stall speed and hug the terrain the AI will crash eventually. On the other hand, water terrain is flat so maybe it would work...if you want a boat going fast enough to maintain lift. Maybe one of Jag's hidden helicopter foils? I don't know. What am I talking about anyway? I shouldn't even be discussing something I know nothing about. Time for the medication. See ya when I wake up. [This message has been edited by Jerry (edited 10-16-2000).] IP: Logged |

Spanky here... When i was writing my mission making TUT and was testing the missions, the AI wouldn't fly under a couple hundred feet even if you told him too in the mission editor. There is a minimum hight they like to stay at. Could someone try the heaving flight deck DOF? That would really be cool. Starks idea also sounds really good. I would add that we could make a 1 peice Carrier group that goes in a straight line and then you could use that in missions, a carrier group that travels. IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Oh yeah if you were going to do that you might as well animate the wake too.

Yup, but it only travelled in a straight line for a given distance and then stopped or backed up and as I recall it was no longer solid - so you couldn't land on it.-Stark IP: Logged |

Actually, you can make a ship "solid" so that you can land on it. But it doesn't have any friction. Your plane will stop and the ship slides out from under it. That's because, as far as the physics engine is concerned, the ship is sitting still.IP: Logged |

That's hilarious Mighty! A total lack of friction, I love it! Any possibility of this being corrected... -Stark IP: Logged |
