With AC3d you can make things to put into OPS? But OPS gives it properties?
If you make something in AC3D and add it to an a/c in OPS does it affect the flight model?

And if you take one a/c and change the wings and shape to a new plane, it keeps the older characteristics of the old plane?

Am I right in any of this?

Thanks

AC3d is just a modeling program. OPS gives that model properties, airfoils etc.... (You have to define or type in most of the properties) It doesnt matter what the model looks like as to what the properties will be. For instance, you could model a brick in AC3d and have it fly like a Mustang in OPS.

Now when you copy stuff from one plane to another in OPS, that copied part takes its properties with it.

The binary .sm file contains botht the 3d meshes AND the text properties that define flight and damage models.

Hippie's tool generates a .ol file that you can read and edit - it has all the properties. You can then rebuild the .ol file into the .sm to use in SDOE.

OpenPlane Studio is a high level editor that works right off the .sm file itself and lets you update the properties in a more humanly readable format. The real power of OPS is that it lets you rotate and position the various aircraft parts while seeing the aircraft rendered. It also lets you set up DOFS (movement hinges) in a visual way. OPS does not let you edit the actual mesh, this is what ac3d or 3dsmax is for.

The mesh has nothing to do with FM/DM, but as ArgonV said, properties are attached to objects - so a wing mesh would have the wing specs attached to it. Also the orientaiton of the mesh in OPS DOES effect the FM, so wing dihedral is modeled by actually roating the mesh in OPS, not in AC3D!!!! This is very important. Also note that vertical stabalizers/rudders are rotated funny, know one knows why

I use Hippie's tools to generate LOD meshes, then I edit them with AC3D, then I use Hippie's tool to re-build the SM file. Now I open teh new SM file in OPS and position the parts and set the FM/DM.

But if I delete the wings of an a/c and add in LODs from AC3d then it won't fly?

Does anyone know how the SR-71 handles?

Also the trial AC3D new version doesn't work on my pc. It loads up but the view windows show the background or nothing at all. Any ideas?

Thanks

Yep thats right!

If you delete the wings in ops, you delete the properties. If you do it in AC3D, likewise, you lose the propertiews that were attached to the model part when you re-build.

If you want to replace a model part with another, you must import the new model LOD onto the existing part you want to replace. If you do this in AC3D, you just select the LOD you want to replace, and import a new LOD file. Part replaced. Then re-build.

To import in OPS, again select the part and import the .OBJ. I have never got the LOD import to work properly.

hope this helps!

p.s. Sr71 handling....sr71..thats the Blackbird isnt it?

One flew out to RNAS Yeovilton for their annual Airday. Cruising over the Atlantic, It began its turn for approach as it crossed the west coast of england. It's turn was completed over Belgium! Mach 3, straight lines only!

Snake!

If youŽre using OPS 1.2 youŽll have to reload (the two-arrowed icon in the toolbar) the sm-file after youŽve imported the LOD to see the change. If youŽre using OPS 1.3 the change is seen instantly.(Hope IŽm clear enough, if not, let me know).

Hmm,SR71, sounds interesting...

Ok so is the Flight Model and Damage Model invisible? Or must it have something to be attached to?
If it is invisible then you could make a new FM/DM and model a brick for example to fly like an F-15 right?

Or must I take a moel like the Mustang, take its wings and edit their shape so you can keep its FM?

This stuff is really cool but kinda complex,

Thanks

Snake

So in SDOE terms the Blackbird handles like the B-17?

The FM and DM are invisible, and yes, you could make a brick fly like an F15.

I personally, am able to make an F15 fly like a brick.....

Seriously, though, airfoils, inertia and everything else that makes the model fly like whatever plane it is supposed to be are invisible. The properties are attached to the model parts that need the properties, but the shape of the model itself is not a factor. The knack of modelling is to make the thing look like the real thing. Making it fly like the real thing is another skill entirely.

Happy indeed is the man who can do both!
