Well, in AC3D it's pretty easy, as long as you thought about wheer the cuts would be when you built your mesh.....

AC3D has a cut away function. Otherwise, I copy the verts that make up the part and then remoe any surfaces it may have. Then a quick convex hull, and you're done!

For a cheap program, AC3D has some really good functions! Until I get hold of 3DMax for free, I'll stick with it!

You should build your aircraft to plan for these seperate objects. In AC3D, the plan is:

Build the seperate parts, make sure they fit perfect and share verts.

Split into upper/lower left/right objects for each existing object

Texture each object, left/right top and bottom.

Put it all back together again into one object, well like a left and right wings/airlerons/flaps object, a fuselage/tail section object, an elevator/tail object, and a rudder/tail object etc.

Make sure the verts are still shared, then optimize each object to re-share the verts. Double check normals and 1-sided/2-sided as well as assigned texture ID's via the poly color.

Smooth the object! This is key! This will now set the vertex normals to make this object appear smooth. This will eliminate seams!

Now "cut-away" the objects, cut the ailerons and flaps from the wings, cut the fuselage, etc. DO NOT re-smooth again or you are screwed -this would re-set the vertex normals and create seams where the seperate objects meet.

Now export each LOD

The canopy is an easy part (about 30 min in ac3d). You lay out where the window panes are - one window pane per face, irrigardless of curve, just make sure that you have the bends in the right place for the curve. You then go into the preferences, set the hole size to 90%. Select the pane faces and click 'Surface->Make Hole' or is it 'Cut'? Anyways, you have a nice cockpit frame.

Another fine example of why it pays to plan ahead when you start your mesh. Hole cutting a canopy is quick & effective.....but useless if you haven't got square polys where you need square panes etc. I now sit down and sketch out my layout before I start a model. Makes damn sure you have verts where you need them!

AC3D draws it's spheres from square poly's by default....brilliant for curved screens!

I'm sure that 3dsmax can do it $2,960 times better and easier

Remember why i use it SV, a product that actually works is worth alot more to me then anyone that doesn't

Ac3d just isn't reliable.

I haven't had AC3D crap out on me in ages, and I use software OpenGL . The 3dfx minigl doesn't work with it. The funny thing is, I didn't notice I was using software until last week . I am not really sure that I am using software as I installed glsetup (that program that sets up your GL driver, it came with TreadMarks).

I have had my ATI card crap out due to Win98 updating my drivers. The '95 edittions ran fine with it .

Anyways, when I make my canopy, I usually don't do more than plan on where the canopy stops and starts, then I add verticies and faces where needed.

Yeah Ac3d can be great and for you guys that it works flawlessly it might be the perfect solution. For me the viewports quit working and there was nothing i could do about it so i switched to max.

As some know my first 3d modeling was in ac3d and boy i liked the interface, max is messed, you can customize it but until you know what you need and don't theres now real point, so you have to learn it first and THEN customize.

LOL

Now that i'm getting the hang of max I'm really likeing it and some of its advanced features.

Now If i could just get stuff into and out of max reliably. Thats my biggest problem right now.
