Once I release the Beta versions of the torpedoes... I think I'll start work on a guided missle next for all the new modern aircraft. I have a fairly good idea that might just work.Do you guys know the way some of the pilots heads track the targets? What if these were placed on a missile and you gave them a horizontal and vertical wing surface? That way when the "pilot head" looked towards the target, the wings would move also because they are attached to the head thus causing the missile to track and follow targets. Any comments, ideas, improvemants, reasons why it wont work? ------------------ -=Make sims, not hype=- Visit My Site! http://ArgonV.tripod.com/My_Page.html [This message has been edited by ArgonV (edited 09-22-2000).] IP: Logged |

I think that is a really interesting idea. The only problems I see are keeping the head locked on one target, providing the thrust for the missile, and possibly some issues with having a launchable weapon which contains a turret object. If the searchlight idea ever gets off the ground, maybe it could also use a turret to try to keep a target locked in its beam. charm IP: Logged |

Argon, if this works, i can whip up some AIM-9 and AIM-7 models in about 10 mins. IP: Logged |

The Germans used Guided Glide Bombs in the latter part of the war, eg Fritz-x 3300 lb winged bomb carried by Dornier 217's on 10 sept 43, they were released and then radio-control guided from the Do217 to the target, no power though, used against Italian Battleships changing sides. The Roma was sunk and the Italia badly damaged. The Henshel 293 was another Guided Glide Bomb which had a 1100lb warhead and was similar in operation to the Fritz-x. There was also the smaller Bv 246 which was carried by a Fw190, don't know if this was guided but could well have been.------------------ IP: Logged |

This will be totally awsome! This may be far down the road but after the plane that the missle is headed for releases chaf or a flare (already flares in the A-10!), the tracking head could switch targets to the flare or chaff. If percentages are allowed it could be like 80% of the time. Just a suggestion... weasel

An interesting consequence of adding the "gunner-head" to the pilot is that you can actually "fly" the head yourself Using the F7 key, you can switch positions to the pilot's head, and move it around with the joystick. If you "relinquish control," the head becomes a gunner again, and tracks targets. It's also worth noting that the pilot is a separate object from the plane, yet you can control his head. I haven't checked to see if that still works after bailout (detach), but if it does... That would mean, for a missile, you could F7 yourself into the seeker head, and fly the missile to target (if the airfoils are attached to the head) or re-orient the "eyes" of the missile so that you could get it looking at the target you wanted it to go after. Worth a try at least... ------------------ --jedi-- IP: Logged |

Don't gunners die when their parrent model part detaches?IP: Logged |

Yep!That is why I had to make sure the gunners were child objects of the nose and tail sections for my B17 Mods. Otherwise, you lose the nose, and the gun is still there! IP: Logged |

ArgonV, Hows progress on this? It sounds really interesting! And Razer why don't you just makes some rockets of the AIM-7 and AIM-9, and hey thats what the AIM-7 is anyway! Snake IP: Logged |

Sorry guys, It wont work... Ive tried everything there is to do with this head tracking idea. Weapons cannot have weapons defined as there is no ppf file for them.IP: Logged |

No ppfs on weapons... Yeah, but think of it this way, Argon: The Mistel Ju88 is an aircraft, right? If only we could have the Mistel continue to propel itself.IP: Logged |

Actually, I think its set as a Vehicle but same difference. The reason why I THINK the engines cut on the Ju88 of the Mistel is because it gets detached from its parent **in a sarcastic tone** and we cant have things that work after theyre detached from their parent can we? Hehe... Darn limitations.IP: Logged |

Hey guys, make two gas tanks, and just link the two junkers engines to the gastank in the junkers, make the engines link to the Junkers.IP: Logged |
