O.K.

Heres where things stand.....

Done about as much to the damage model as I can, and mailed the results over to Farmer Joe. He has completed the basic pilot model and was working on an accurate and detailed skin for it. No point in looking at the right shape if it looks like it's been painted with mud! He's been working off screenshots from B17II, so it has at least served a purpose!!

I'm waiting to here back from FJ with the next steps.

What we have now:

Engines that show progressive smoke damage and can fail.
Possibility of engine fire
Damage lods for the engines
Fuel tank fires for hits to inner and mid wing tanks
Gear liable to damage if engines 2 or 3 shot up. Gear won't fully lower...
What it doesn't do now is blow up at the slightest hit!
Beefed up the wings and engines to allow progressive damage. Increased SFC possible to sim fuel pipes etc. geting hit and the chance of wing/engine fires do the business. Also, removed the explosions when the wing parts took hits. This caused the wing to blow away straight away. Only flak should really do this!

To Do:

Add some damage stuff to the nose ( trying to make it a seperate part ), get the engine smoke on startup working again (don't know why it stopped) and do the same to the tailgunners section of the fuse.
This is about as far as I think I can go with this!

If I don't hear from FJ, I will stuff in the models I have for the crew ( crappy though they are ) and offer her around.

The B24 is calling me.........

to see a few screen shots go to :

and check them out. When I get pictures posting here properly, I will post them.

Very nice pics WT! Thanks to all you guys that are putting in lots of time on this project. It means alot to have the old gal lookin her best now that B-17II is in a holding pattern. SDOE can now claim a B-17 that looks as good as, or better, than B-17II plus tons of other planes to fly!

The new damage model is sooooo important to those that fly this heavy offline, might actually get one home once in awhile.

Hawk, the B-17 wacko! ---o-o-0-o-o---

Spanky here...

WT, On your site you mention that you wonder why they didn't put guys in all the posistions, They tried it but it was too hard on the frame rate.

What did you do to curtail that problem?

SOunds like all the new stuff is great but please remember the frame rate, The b17 is already hard on FSP.

Conservation of framerates has been uppermost in my mind all the time. Farmer Joe is doing some high detail models to put in, but these will only be visible from very close up. Hopefully, this wo't cause too much bother. I am putting together a lower detail version for my own use, since I don't own a killer PC ( Celeron 333 & 96M ram )which suits me fine. The plane itself also didn't seem to be carefully worked out either! when I was doing the damage lods for the engine, I optimised the verts and removed 80! from one engine....

I was going to spruce up the nacelles, but that was shelved due to framerate concerns...

If need be, things like window glass can offer savings to trade off.

Oh yeah, put a full crew into a lancaster and the framerates hardly budged at all!!!

Spanky here...

Very cool man, Glad to see your keeping it all in mind. Great work.

Crazy about the men in the lanc too, I don't think polys actually matter as much as we have been led to belive.

If you want to play with it, I'll mail it to you. There are some bugs to iron out with the crew bailing......only the pilot gets issued with a 'chute.....

But it's fun none the less!!!!!
