Would we go about this by having a 'base bomb' that shattered into burning chunks when dropped?

now that would be cool! If only it could cause a fire which would spread :-)

Hmm... how about each of these little objects having like 100000 obHits and at each damage level, the smoke diameter gets wider (which I beleive makes the fire wider) until it burns itself out.

that would work Werner, yes as you make the smkDiameter bigger, so the fire gets bigger to. I think the best way to approach something like this would be to have a bomb that doesn't explode, and has a high damage level, now, if you had multiple hidden parts that detach on dmgLvl 1, and these parts have a high obHits but start to smk and fire at dmg1 then you could create the effect you are looking for, these parts would spread over a largish area when the bomb hits the ground, and all these parts would then burn, and as the damage gets higher so the diameter gets greater, a little fiddly, but very do-able I think

You could also have heavy small parts to light small parts (spread out farther) that have a higher obHits, and start off with a smaller smoke diameter.
