I think that is done somewhere in the plane's .sm file, but can't recall off the top of my head. SDOE currently will transfer the view distance from one plane to the next. I use this to check out interior views of bombers. I pick a fighter, zoom in all the way, and then go to the bomber I want to look at. It stays that way until you try to zoom and then it will snap to the set distance for the bomber.

We look at the maximum radius of the plane and don't let you get any closer than that. That would probably be the wingtip. There may also be a teeny bit added to get you a couple of feet beyond the wingtip.
