did you remember to convert the model in Max to an editable mesh? Also, use the Jonny Ow plugin not the Max2Obj plugin, using Max2Obj the texture gets all messed up

I use max2obj, the other plugin only exports triangles.

I've always used Max2Obj and never had a problem.

OK, maybe bad info on the plugin, but I found when building the Scharnhorst that after texturing and exporting using Max2Obj, that the texture was twisted across the ships hull, although as soon as I tried the Jonny Ow it was perfect, I can't explain why, so I blamed the plugin since one worked and one didn't.

Let me know if you want the Johnny Ow plugin, drop me a mail and I'll send it to you

Hi Nat!

I tried emailing your aol.com address, but it keeps bouncing it back.

I just got 3DS Max 2.5 and I'm learning the ropes with it. I tried Max2Obj
but I can't get it to work. I'd like to give Johnny Ow a try, if possible.
Can you email it to me? My addy is ville.pitkanen@hut.fi.

Any other tips how to get stuff ported between Max and OPS?

Thanks!

If you search around the forum there is heaps of info on the do's and don't of using the Max2Obj with OPS.

Specifically for the texture problem, MAX uses UVW mapping, SDOE (and OPS) only support UV mapping. Max2OBJ also only supports UV mapping but it appears to ignore the W rather than doing some intelligent processing.

The solution to this is to make sure the that W parameter in the UVW mapping rollout is set to 0.0 *before* you start mapping.

There is good and bad points about both the Max2Obj and the Johnny Ow plugins. Max2Obj does textures and colours OK but messes up the vertex normals (shading) Johnny Ow's doesn't support textures and colours but seems to handle the shading OK.

This is one of the reasons I did the VRML plugin. Use that if you can and let me know if there are any problems with it. The one problem I know about is that Max doesn't export the max material reference properly when there is more than one material assigned to an object.

Bryan,

I'm considering starting to use your new VRML plugin. However got a few questions about it.

When exporting to VRML 97 in Max when the dialog pops up with options (for example triangles or quads)for output, what do you recommend we check/don't check?

Thanks. I've been using Max2Obj and it crashes me to desktop on every export. I loaded up Johnny OWs but my Max2Obj seems to insist on running and Johnnys won't. So a change right now would be nice.

Hi Bryan, do you still have the Yak.wrl I sent you? The wings were coming in very strangely with one poly stretching out into infinity.
