To smooth it select all (Control A), optimize vertices, then optimize surfaces.
After that select all again and hit the smooth button in the lower left.

Since fighter squadron doesnt support dynamic lighting shadows arent that important. So what I do is right click the color of the parts, then crank up the ambient and emissive light values (all colors in the same amount so the model remains white) until the ugly shadows disappear.

It looks like you have some problems there, but not too many! Here are some things that can (and do) cause those evil black areas to show up. These black areas will show up in the game, but they will be more subtle.

1. Incorrect Normals. USe 1 sided polys whenever possible. Now go into 3d menu and choose "show normals" Now you will see lines perp. to each poly facing the direction that the poly is visable from. Make sure your normals are correct! You can select any number of polys and chose "flip normals" to reverse the normal directions for those polys

2. Polys that ajoin MUST share vertecies if you are smooth shading! If the verts occupy the same, or close to the same location then that is wrong. Select the verts that should be shared and chose "snap verts together." Now optimize verts, this will take the dupe verts and share them!

3. You may have bad vertex normal... sorry, there is no known cure for this one yet

Look good though! How many polys are you up to now?
