Well I've just discovered this
http://home.swipnet.se/~w-50954/hv/mdl/mdl2dxf.htm

For some reason only a few MDL files would be succesfully converted. I don't know if it is due to a format change from FS98 (95, whatever) to CFS. But it is worth trying this if you need a decent start for your 3D model. The imported DXFs have wrong normals, strange polygons and all kind of bugs, but it's better than the old rusty FSD files .

Forgive me please - just my opinion - especially the P40 looks more like a 2nd detail lod to me. Might be it looks much better with smoothing on, dont know.
Wouldn't it be easier to build models all new from scratch ? This should take not more than 1 or 2 weeks for a plane like the P40.
I mean as a base to start with it is good, but I find it harder to modify models wich I dont made by myself than to model it from 0.

Just my thought, dont care about it

Good find anyway !!!

well, I guess that you could use the model to cut up into parts to be put together as a finished a/c, I guess that could speed things up actually, but hey, what do I know, I don't build these things!

I think that is a good find. I agree with Laika that the models aren't good enough for a 1st level LOD, but wouldn't it be useful as a second? That way you could just cut it up and import it into the game. Also, it might be useful to create as a ground unit: make it a vehicle that could be parked by the runway to add ambiance.

Furthermore, when CFS2 comes out maybe this conversion method will prove useful for getting new, higher poly planes into SDOE.

Not a Potez... but very close . Liore et Olivier LeO 45, one of my favourite "exotic" WWII planes. A beautiful and very innovative aircraft.

It's a good idea to make them as ground targets. I'll try that. So we can make "may '40" missions where RAF hurricanes defend french air bases... Wow!

Eh eh: Not LeO 45, but LeO 145. Medium bomber. It had a dorsal gunners position armed with an early Hispano 20mm. It was more than six feet long, and manually traversed. Must 'ave been a tough job for the gunner!

One of these would be nice, eh?

Too bad I'm not a 3D modeler.

Snickers, all I did was put the mdl2dxf.exe file in a folder. (Use Windows Explore). Then I go to my CFS aircraft folder. In the folder of the plane you want to use, there should be a Model folder. Open that up and copy the .mdl file.
Then I copy it over to the folder with mdl2dxf.exe.
All you do now is drag the .mdl file on top of the mdl2dxf.exe file. A small dos window will appear while the file is converted, and then the dxf file will appear in your folder.

I'll send it if you still have problems with it.

OK, finally got it to go... (dont know what I was doing wrong but now have some excellent 2nd level models..... Some are bording on 1st. One thing I noticed, is that these will have to be scaled. PBY wingspan in AC3D should be 104 units. Its at about 15000 units in the converted ones....
