Laika, you really are doing a bang up job! The Russians need this bomber as they only have 2 planes to date. I'm very happy to see such progress and I know (after flying the Rata) you will do a surpurb job.

Actually I could need 2 heads (3 would be better) and about 32 fingers...but one thing is sure: While working on the Pe2 it becomes clear that the I-16 is really not perfect at all - I'll redo and add some things to the I-16 when the Pe2-beta is out.

BLACK CROSS / RED STAR
The Air War Over the Eastern Front
Volume I
Operation Barbarossa, 1941

336 8.5" x 11" pages with 187 photos (many never before published), 6 maps,
glossary, appendix, bibliography, source notes, and index.

Published by Pacifica Military History
ISBN 0-935553-48-7

THE AIR WAR OVER THE EASTERN FRONT in World War II was history's largest
and longest air campaign. Nevertheless, it has been one of the least known
and least understood chapters of aviation history. This is because earlier
publications on this immense subject have been based on material taken
almost exclusively from the German side.

Black Cross/Red Star--in four photo-laden volumes--is to be the most
complete and detailed series ever published on the air war over the Eastern
Front. It presents for the first time a true balance between German and
Soviet accounts.

Aviation historians Christer Bergström and Andrey Mikhailov have undertaken
a huge research effort to glean the true events of this air war. Thanks to
their painstaking research and brilliant analysis of German archival
material, some of the first Soviet Air Forces records ever to be seen in
the West, and newly released information from German and Soviet airmen who
participated, they are able present in this series many valuable new
insights into the vast Eastern Front aerial struggle.

Christer Bergström has been a scholar of the history of the German Air
Force in World War II for almost thirty years and has written several other
books on this subject.

Andrey Mikhailov is recognized as a well-versed scholar in the history of
the Soviet Air Forces. Black Cross/Red Star is his first book.

Ughhh - work goes slowly, did some things with the panel today, aaahh - new textures are needed, instruments are still not 100% clear (what and where..). Added 2nd & 3rd LOds to the pilot and Navigator. Pilot.sm is OK, Navigator is still "bugish". UBK-rear-gun is working better now, but still not perfect. 2nd cockpit Lods is done. New propellers are fine (with dmg-Lods). BodyPts are done. Inertias are done (position only).

Still to do (in no order ):

- "upper-tail-window"
- Radio Operator's position
- Main Panels
- Instruments
- Side Panels
- more side panels
- rudder/steer thing
- wheel Pts
- pylons/bays
- detail (radio mast etc.)

- FM (mostly Tailslides job)
- DM

Tested it laika..

-instrument panel is missing, but needles are there
-training mission for ground attack has no bombs

I love what you've done so far!! The damage lods are excellent and it is also WAY more FPS friendly than any of the other bombers in the game. This is going to be my favourite bomber for sure. Are you using .wrl export from max to get n-gons ?

Tail - no panel ? Hmmm - strange, very strange. I checked it back, and it should be there (along with the old needles from the base plane (lanc)). Of course the training mission for ground attacks has no bomb, cause there are no bombs in the loadout, cause the pylons/bombPts are not set up yet. I didn't use the .wrl import to save polys, I read an article on camasutra - I believe the usage of n-gons or quads won't increase FPS much, the major thing is the vertex-pool - less verts - better FPS !?

Well, it seems we won't see a beta in the next time - trouble with the turret/gun dofs and not enought time to work all day...

Today I started with the gunsight (hi-res model is nearly done, no textures yet) and textured the instruments on the panel wich are known...

One other thing - the rear gunner needs a new 2nd lod (3rd lod, the old ones are without legs, but that doesnt look good ) - more work...

Oleg from Maddox (IL-2) didn't replied yet to my "help me" post, he's the only one who could help me with the instruments, I hope he will be so kind and help me again - Its a fact, and I'm very proud, that he sends me much material for the Pe2, ultra detailed drawings and such stuff, thanks Oleg !

I mailed to another russian guy, it seems he knows much about the turrets/gun installation used for the Pe-2...I hope he replies...

And - I got a small rest of a privat life, beside the Pe2, and unfortunatly there are also some problems

We'll see what I can do this night

Hey Laika-
The progress you are making on this plane is amazing! Don't burn yourself out doing it though. I'm astonished that only one person is currently working on SDOE's first user created WWII multi-crew aircraft, and that so much work has been done toward its completion!

That said, I eagerly await the next version of it. :-)
