Topic: obModel - I had to do what ???

I read an older topic covering these damn obModel thing - is it really necessary to use file references (I dont like them much!) ??? No other way ? leftWing ....middleWingL ..........wingTipL
I added a new (damage)model for wingTipL as a child of it. It works - when the tip is detached, my "damage model" unhides and replaces the "normal model". Fine - but when I now shoot and detach the middleWingL, his damage models (the normal hidden models for the end of the wing part) did not unhide ! It has to be the obModel thing for the wingtip- I removed it and all works fine (more or less). Next thing is that when I end the mission (with obModel "on") I go directly to DT. Damn ! I could finish those damn damage models (never liked this work much, now I know why) today. But so the new week starts and no time for anything. Please help ! IP: Logged |

And if there is no other way - how should I do this: quote: The damage models MUST be in the closet. Make sure the file reference Raider talked about is ABOVE the top level of your aircraft.
-Svthe Pe2.sm file starts with PePropFast, so the needed file reference would allways be a child of another object. Wuahhauawaäääa IP: Logged |

You do not have to use file refs as far as I know. Just place a new model above your root model, up where the shadow and propFast are.Make sure you name you model unique to your aircraft! You should use your aircraft name in the model names "in the closet" You can use hide/unhide for extra parts like showing wing root ribs when exposed. For damaging existing parts, use model replacement. ------------------ -Sv =FC= WWI in SDOE!

Thanks - "unique" names - something like "Pe2LOWDmg" ??? Seems I have to think and read more about the toilet thingy Still no real clue how to add a new object into my sm-file. Copy and paste is ok , but so I can only "add" child objects to an existing parent. Hmmm - I'll do some trials, hoping that it will work, if not the release of the first beta is far away Sv (and the others of course) would it be possible just to cut out the whole Pe2.sm file and paste into another sm ? Ha ! Parent children anyway I´m a whiner or what ? I looked closer to the .sm file (to the part above the Pe2) and HEY there are alot of unused ominious (? ) objects called g416 or engshad4 or ilmW or so. Some of them are unused shadow parts (from the 4 engined lanc) and some are very unknown like the g416 thing (no airfoil just twice obDynamic !???) . So next part of my work -> deleting some of them and see what happens, if all goes fine these damn damage parts should be done in the next couple of days. Of course I had to take a closer look into the other planes which using obModel Thanks !

Laika,Just click anywhere on the 3d window NOT on your plane - no objects should be selected. Now paste, your object will be at the top level above your aircraft root! -Sv

One other important little tidbit, in case you don't have it is that models in the 'Closet' must have the 'obDynamic' property defined, and probably nothing else. I don't know what will happen if you swapin a model with other properties defined.IP: Logged |

It still won't work. I did exactly what you said: I cut out the damage Model for the outer Wing, reload OPS, and then paste it into the "closet" (its now the first object in the .sm file). I set it to obDynamic. It works so far, that the undamaged wingtip is replaced by the "PeOuterWingLeftDmg" model, but then it gets worse: still those 2 problems: (onDetach (obUnhide 'WMILDmg)) (onChildDetach 'leftWingTip (obUnhide 'WMOLDmg)) This is a part of the proplist for the middle wing, and it does not work when I use obModel for the outer wing. So the "ends" for the detached middle wing stay/become hidden ! I don't understand why ! Also the outer-flap (wich is a child object of the middle wing) gets lost when the wingtip is detached - might be the reason for the second thing:t when I end a mission I go directly back to the DT. Laika,So your object replacement works, but not the show/hide of the detach rib? -Sv IP: Logged |

Yeah the replacement works. The model-structure of the wingtip was not good for a normal "detach rib" so I just build a new wingtip+"detach-rib" and this is my replace model. Anyway this works. Again - the wingtip is a child of the middle wing and somehow when the obModel routine of the wingtip is done, all other child objects of the middle wing are gone (but these childs objects are in the same level like the wingtip, they're not childs of the wingtip)- the flap does not work/is no longer existant and the replace ribs for the middle wing are missing too and this (I think) causes the CTD when I end the mission (with a fine detached and replaced wingtip, but the middle wing is worse). I cant explain it better - should I send you the .sm file ? LK IP: Logged |

Send all your aircraft files to sean@schoolmusic.com - I think it will be much easier to help out if I could see it -Sv IP: Logged |

On a related note Bryan, I can't insert a file reference at the top level of the tree.. OPS dumps out with an error. TS

Tail - did you tried to use a parent for the reference file :add a object (with no lods) to the top of the tree like Sv said (see above) - select it and add the file reference. This would give you an "empty" object and this should (who knows) work like a "group". Might be that I'm completly wrong.

Thats what I did in the last version of the Yak and it worked ok. It'd still be nice to be able to insert the file reference at the root level, I think the file format supports it. TS
