Topic: What's going on with the SOS???

Several of you have asked what's taking so <insert expletive> long in getting the SOS going and why we haven't whipped the lawyers into getting it done faster. As it turns out, the delay is more about Parsoft/Inertia than lawyers. In short, Parsoft still has full rights to the OpenPlane engine and Inertia is using it under license. Transferring ownership of OpenPlane to Inertia is in progress, but will take an undetermined amount of time (with luck, we're only talking about a few months more). Rather than create an SOS license through Parsoft, which will then have to be re-done once Inertia has full ownership of OpenPlane, it made more sense to wait until the asset transfer is complete before starting SOS. So... Does this mean that people interested in getting hold of the source will have to wait several months more? No. We'll take applications on a case by case basis, but if you are interested in reviewing the code for up to 90 days please send the following to michaelh@inertiagames.com Full name Mailing address Voice phone number Fax number (required to receive the NDA) ** Purpose for which you intend to use the source ** This NDA will not allow you to distribute the source or binaries built from it, but will give you the ability to look at the code and make modifications for your own evaluation. In order to build the source you may receive, you'll need to have Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 and the DirectX 7 SDK installed. Thank you Michael. I know it (the comments) must have grated sometimes. (I know it did with me). No, I am not enough of a programmer to jump in, but I do appreciate the efforts of all involved....------------------ Snickers =FC= IP: Logged |

Would it be possible to receive the NDA by email? I don't have a fax. ------------------ P/O STef Editor http://stephan.bondier.free.fr/gazette.html

Stephan. At the moment, no as we have to ensure the NDA we receive is the one we sent out.[This message has been edited by Michael Harrison (edited 05-19-2000).] IP: Logged |

Also, although you aren't permitted to redistribute binaries, there's nothing (but time) to prevent any change you make from being rolled back into the main source and put out with the FSC patches. http://www.fightersquadron.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/000731.html IP: Logged |

Spanky here... OK!! Thanks a TON man. Thats great stuff. Actually even the explanation about the transfer of ownership of openplane would have been great. I thought Parsoft changed its name to Inertia. I didn't know they were seperate companies. Cool stuff. Thanks alot. Spanky IP: Logged |

MH, would you consider e-mailing the NDA so a person could print it, then fax it back to you?IP: Logged |

If you don't have a fax machine, try http://www.efax.com/ You can send and receive faxes through email. My friend uses it and is pretty happy with it.IP: Logged |

DanW/Stef...At the moment, fax is the only way to go. Once we can convert the NDA to PDF format we'll be able to email it, but not yet. IP: Logged |

When you say that the code will be given out on a case by case basis, does that mean you only want a couple of people to have access to it? I'm wondering because I'm curious to look at the AI code in particular, but I mostly have programming experience in VB, and not much in C. So, I wouldn't want to take away from those who stand a good chance of making really positive contributions to the product, when I just want to understand a small piece of code from a design point of view.charm IP: Logged |

I have C++ 6.0 and DirectX 7.0a on my home machine. I have a fax/modem but I do not know what DirectX 7 SDK is. I am like charmstar in that I would like to look at the code but do not think I could help out much. What would it take??? Thanks...IP: Logged |

As it turns out, we can email the NDA's to people. We can export to a PDF now and all you have to do is sign and send it back. From the questions I've received, it's important that I also mention that if you don't have a specific purpose for evaluating the code, there's really not much point in looking at it. Since you'll be under NDA, you can't use what you find for other purposes, so just seeing how we do things could actually be detrimental if you then go on to use what you find, somewhere else. The main reason we're making this available is so that people who have shown the ability and desire to work with OpenPlane have greater exposure to the engine and can add to it for the benefit of all. At any rate, for those people without fax access, there is another avenue open. IP: Logged |
