Hi Jedi,

Are all the new damage model features you are putting into the f4u for the contest plane pack going to be added to all of the other planes over time? Those new additions sound like they will add so much more realism.

Well, I guess it remains to be seen. I know Kopper has a new damage model system in the works, but I haven't seen it yet. What's in the new F4U versions is basically "borrowed" from Laika and Team Jug, but IMO at least the fuel tank fire and gun jamming should become "standard" at some point. You can also shoot out the landing gear on the Corsair, and I think that should be given some consideration as a possible "standard" also. Airplanes didn't just blow up or fall apart--sometimes you just lost systems functions.

I also added in the ability to actually shoot off the flight control surfaces, but apparently the actual "effect" from doing that rests with the wing, vert, and horiz stabilizers, so losing your left aileron doesn't actually "feel" like you've lost it. I have some ideas how to make that work right, but I didn't get to put that into this version. The next version, for either Planepack 5.4 or 5.5(?), will have a more realistic cockpit, and hopefully the "real" flight control damage.

Actually, I'd be kind of surprised if we got a "standard" set of damage features, unless we can get all the guys who have come up with the various damage ideas to agree on a list of things every plane should have, and then get the expert on each feature to either upgrade ALL the planes, or publish a tutorial of some kind for how to do it.

jedi,

have you fixed up the cloud glass on the F4Us?

The ones I have still have the mustang
cloud glass, so the flying through clouds
effect does not look right.

Hippie.

It is possible to make ailerons that actually get shot out... if you look at the latest version of the Fokker Dr1 that Reaperman, Raider and I worked on, I believe that was incorporated. However, it definitely affects the roll rate, and in some ways is kind of annoying, depending on the plane. I like the effect very much when its done for the rudder though, so at least you can get partway there.

I did a little bit of experimentation with the Zero, modifying the control surfaces, and then putting an obprob in the ondmg proplist for the wings that would make a certain chance the aileron/flaps fall off. The result was pretty sweet because it models control wire damage... watching a plane go down with no obvious damage other than a thin stream of whitish smoke coming from the wing is pretty cool :-) Unfortunately it does affect the FM, so its sort of a tradeoff.

As for modeling gunjams, that should be a piece of cake for WWII planes. Just use obprob in the loadout file, as Whirlwind or Falck? first suggested, with some chance that the gun has less ammo than it actually carried. The gun running out of bullets early will give the same effect as a jam. The sucky thing is that there is no way to clear that kind of "jam", so it isn't good for WWI planes :-(

If you want more interesting DM ideas, you should check out the Fokker DVII engine, which has a nice damage model and isn't too difficult to deal with.

cheers,
charm

Oops! Guess I'll have to look at that...

Charm--the gunjams are even easier than that. The actual "works" of the gun is invisible, so all you have to do is detach it when the wing or gun is damaged. No gun--> jammed The 3D model of the gun itself is unchanged.

I haven't looked very closely at the DVII modeling, other than stealing Dirk of course I'll have to look at that one too...

I stole my DM for the new version of the Yak from the I16. It's great, engine fires, fuel leaks, pilot kills. Very straightforward too didn't take long to add, I just weakened the engine some since mine's an inline. If all the planes had this the damage bug wouldn't be so annoying.

I should mention that the I-16 pilot does not work right under flak fire. I hope I can do it better with the "Peschka"-pilot.

Did someone checked the polyflags of the planes yet ? Somehow I got the feeling that some flags for some planes are not right.
