Dumb question, maybe off-topic, but I dont care anymore !WOULD it be possible to programm a whole new sim ? I dont know much about programing, thats why I ask. I assume 3D models and artwork is not that problem. But the code - are there any guys (like kopper) out there which would say " Hmmm - maybe this is possible, I´m able to do this..." ? I thought (dreamed) about a similiar thing to OpenPlane (TM)with less or no restrictions like OpenPlane (TM) has. Better (engine) DM and more FM-possibilitys etc pp. How long would this take ? One year ? Two ? Danm it's pretty hot here, maybe I´m overheated. Uahgpff-pf I´ll take a bath. - LK IP: Logged |

Given time and resources anything is possible.I started doing a Flight Sim Toolkit compatible engine. I never got up to doing the physics modeling, I spent ages on it and all I ended up with was the worlds slowest and ugliest flight sim 3D graphics engine . Basically it would take a long time working part time and the results most likely poor. SOS SDOE, A future OpenPLane engined game or FSTe are the only hope. Flightgear seems to be very civil aviation oriented. Or maybe I should revive my Redfly engine . Hippie. IP: Logged |

Spanky here... As much as I would like to say that it is totally possible. I just can't see it happening.
You would need a core of people that have INSANE dedication. Like give away their free time for the next 2 years. Now if someone wanted to start a development company and come up with a demo to show prospective publishers. Well that could be a whole different story. Theres some pretty good talent around here but even with the programmers, do any of them have any actual paying experience in 3d game development? I can't see a publisher paying for anything without at least one head programmer who has some proven experience. The 3d and texturing side wouldn't be so bad cause you can show right now what you can do So In my mind an opensouce Free ww2 flight sim is pretty doubtfull. An actual paying sim that is published for money COULD be a little more feasible if you can get one or more programers with 3d and physics experience and you guys can slap together a good demo to show off. Spanky here.. Oh yeah, I have read in some places that he way to get your game published is to. either make a full game development document. A hell of a detailed write up on what you want to do and how your going to do it. OR Come out with a good tech demo do show what you can do. I would think that BOTH would be even better. Just some random thoughts for ya

You might think me rather sick for saying this but....Who owns the Openplane engine? Parsoft isn't it.... ok, so we build a sim using their Openplane engine, bugs an all with the stuff we have here, me and a couple of guys will add new terrain etc.. then.. we show them that, and list what we want to do but can't because we need the source code.. give it to us and let us build them a good sim this time. OK, Parsaft are a bunch of prats.. but if it worked out we could build a great sim, and have them publish it.. and even better, maybe actually get paid for doing it ::cough:: or am I talking shit due to lack of sleep recently? Parsoft if not a publisher, but a developer. Totally different ends of the business. Like a Hollywood studio and a movie theater chain. Actually more like an author and book publisher - Tom Clancy vs. Harper Collins.[This message has been edited by Jerry (edited 05-04-2000).] IP: Logged |

This is absolute incredible how you are shor on memory. Never read my posts, right?I want to try to set up a teamp of people to work on a new OP based sim. I'm starting to have contact with people for licensing at Inertia and I still need candidature of people who: 1) might be interested 2) will be available for the development (paid) This is of course if we can find a publisher (or whatever) to fund the project.

Stef,I think once you have the infrastructure for such a thing set up, you will have lots of serious inquiries. IP: Logged |

Spanky here.... A new OP based sim MIGHT be a great Idea. BUT you have to make sure they give you full rights to adapt and change the source code. Who is going to come up with the money to pay for all this? IP: Logged |

As expressed earlier, this is the problem. First step is to set up a team of motivated people. Things will follow up then.I expect to have full code license to be used as a base; It will help to save time and thus to publishers eye, money. I'm ready to get in debt for this, but not until there is a team and some real steps have been processed (positive publisher contact, etc.)

STef - I did not forgot anything and I read your post (and replied), I was talking about a completly new sim. Not that I think this is the best we could do, I just was interested to know how hard this would be and how long it could take etc pp.Seems to be a bit too huge ... LK IP: Logged |
