I've been tooling around in a new version of the Yak and just added stallable rudder and elevators... WHOAH! The spins seem a lot less scripted now and low speed handling feels a lot more natural. Flares on landing are pretty tasty too, I'm really excited about this !

Why wasn't this added before? Well the propeller airfoils are shared with all sorts of things.. plane wings, RUDDERS, ELEVATORS, you name it.

The plan Zur and I had was to introduce copies of these airfoils called Prop1 etc with plane pack 5.3 (which we did). These are copies of the airfoils to be used by the propeller and are still 'unstallable' so they won't wreck the speeds of all the aircraft.

Then we were hoping to make the rudder/elevator airfoils stallable for the next plane pack. Anyways what does this mean? In your plane simply change this line of your prop:

(airSection 'RAF34foil 'RAF34foil 'NACA23016 'NACA23016 'NACA0012 'NACA0010)

to this:

(airSection 'PROP1foil 'PROP1foil 'PROP2foil 'PROP2foil 'PROP3foi 'PROP4foi)

Exact same airfoils just different names. The airfoils are in the latest plane pack if you want to include them with your plane.

Tailslide,

While you're at it, how about creating a symetrical stabilizer airfoil? No lift at 0 degrees AoA ? max lift +-20 degrees and then stall. up/down airfoil the same! give it no airControl surfaces and seperate airfoils for the fin and rudder/ tailplane and elevators. That might fix the crap rudders we have, Zoycite's dvii is much better for IMO.

Just a thought, must dash, going on holiday to greece today

Why do the prop airfoils have to be unstallable in the first place?

Way to go Tail. I can't wait to try this.

Elric, you have done it again. You have solved a problem I could not overcome.

When I would add new improved airfoils to the DVII (Michael C. sent me some and so did Pang) Both greatly imporved lift. The problem was that the wings had so much lift that the plane wanted to loop with any speed. Even with full down elevator. If I added the new airfoil to the VStab it would be balanced and not loop. But now the problem was that the elevator had fours the effectiveness if you pulled the stick Back and almost no effect when you pushed it forward.

I did not even think about rotating the VStab using airInc to adjust for the improved lift of the wing. Thanks for the idea.

Tail I am going to try your idea right now.

Elric the airfoil used for the stabilizers is NACA0010 which is symmetrical.

Juzz, we don't have real propeller airfoils the only thing that keeps prop blade from stalling out is the same unstallable kludge that kept the planes from spinning.

Spanky here..

What do you mean there arn't stallable.

When i was playing around with making a 51 racer i doubled the horse power and you had to use 50% horse power at first till ya got going or it would barly pull ya forward.

I figured it was cause the prop was slipping

Slipping=stalling?

The original airfoils aren't impossible to stall if they are held at extreme angles of attack (like when they are used in a prop) they will stall. If you remove the fudge that keeps them from stalling when they're wings you get the same effect when they are props as you describe even with normal engine values.

OK, I put the 5.3 prop airfoils into the Corsair (works fine) What should I be doing to make the stallable rudder and elevators? Are you assigning new airfoils there, or do they stall simply by making sure they're different from the ones on the prop? I haven't noticed any real difference in stall or spin behavior in the Corsair as yet.

If you've built some NEW airfoils for the tail surfaces, well....how bout a "test drive?"

Hi Jedi, leaving on a fishing trip in ten minutes will send the stallable tail when I get back on Fri.

In your mailbox, remember to remove the airfoil before using planes that haven't had their props switched to the prop airfoils otherwise they will fly very slow.
