Just so you don't think I'm sitting on my arse all day heres the latest progress for the He 111H-2. Its a seperate flyable (Bearly) aircraft now but only the basic stuff is in the mesh, which is fuselage, wings, HStabs etc. I ended up starting from scratch, just seemed easier that way, especially with the great drawings from dauntless.

Next I'll do the engines, make a rough texture, map it and pass it over to Sebula to do some texture magic, before I tackle the glass bits and other details.

Some Pictures...

In the editor...

On the runway...

Flying.

One question - are the single parts of the wings allready detached ? It looks so smooth somehow ?

Polys are about 418 tris/210 polys. Doesn't include engines inside, wheels etc.

LK: I exported it using the Johnny Ow OBJ plugin as dicussed somewhere else. It does a good job of the shading. I couldn't get MAX2OBJ to export any shading at all for some reason.

Let the world know. We have the same on the Jug tail. I know it's the surface normal vectors that are way off (on the jug that is,) but I don't know rats about how to fix it, short of bringing out a huge sheat of paper, pocket calculator, a full weekend, and do the darned thing by hand. Ugh :-(

Great work man. that sounds like a great poly count too.

I'm scarred of all the glass work and cockpit though. I'm sure it will skyrocket then.

I can't see it being any worse then any of the other planes though. Which is great.

Johnny Ow what ? Seems I missed something. Where can I download it ?

Yes, there is a "shading-gap" between the tail and the fuse, I got this also on the Pe2.

418 polys Wings and Fuse, ok, I´d add about 100 for the Gear and about 120 for each engine (with props). This would make about 650, thats fucking great ! Of course I cant see any (side)windows in the fuse now and these are the poly-killers in the Pe2. But 1000 - 1182 should be possible ! Great !

Bryan,

How are you planning to texture the aircraft? One or two tiff files? Just curious.

You can get away with repeating the bottom inside wing like we did on the Jug. Also, the same can be done with the horizontal stab bottom sides too. The engine can probably be repeated too: each having the same outside and inside.

Thats a nice model.

You guys probably wouldn't believe how easy meshing is once you get good drawings!. This took about 3 fragmented hours. This is a bit easier because the fuselage is quite cylindrical.

Dan, Believe it or not I was contemplating three textures!

It's a largest plane and that might be needed to keep the texture detail up. I think I'll probably go with 2 though, but I will try to keep as much unique as I can.

LK: You can get the plugin from
http://www.max3d.com/plugins/download/objexpow.zip

It won't do materials but it does shading alot better than MAX2OBJ, so if you have shading problems, and the object is using only one texture/colour then you can use it for that.

Hallo Brian, Looking damn good so far. You have modelled one of my favourite planes. Are you modelling it in 3d studio max. If so I am even more impressed. Is it possible to obtain the 3d mesh. I like to see how these are put together. As it is I am not capable of doing anything in 3dmax but if I could change minor features on existing aircraft I would be happy... enough.
I think the best colour scheme I have seen is on a monogram model kit (coould be revel)
Anyway, the front of the engines are white and the plane is predominately black. There is a white band around the tail.
Small piccie at this address. (cut and paste link might work better) http://www.hobbyplace.com/plastics/revell/rmxprops.html

Spanky here...

Can you please try 2 tifs before resorting to 3 Bryan?

That 3rd will push one of the older planes (or new) that only use 1 off some people video cards.

I think 3 is more for the type of planes we hope to see in the future. Say a b29

Three would do nicely for that Bryan. Im not too sure on the actual deminsions of that aircraft, but it looks like it has a pretty big wingspan. In order to keep it all proportional, 3 might be a better way to go.

I would like to paint this thing...it's interesting But, I really need to get off my lazy ass and work on my little Corsair project. I don't mind texture mapping at all...I just hate all the damn welding and smoothing stuff

Did some stuff on the Pe today, DOF´s (the moving ones) are set. Then unfortunatly I started to try to get the shading right - I hate it ! After 2 hours of turning edges and normals - bää, not much better. I´ll try this plugin, hope it works for me !

thanks for the link

Spanky here..

What about the B17 and lanc? How many tiffs do they use?

I guess 3 might be ok but just remember that means you will have to cut one plane out of some missions.
