I notices that with some planes you can not zoom in very close from external view... others you can get closer. Does anyone know what determines this?

I am not talking about that "feature" that lets you get close to a small object, then F5 to a large object and end up super close. I am talking about what determines the point where the zoom stops, well... zooming?

Thanks!

I think its based on the extents of the closest LOD

What is "extents?"

I am seeing this on Nuum's Morane and I think the DVII does not let you get too close as well - but I can not see why. The Morane has small wings, yet you still end up viewing it from quite a distance...

In a CAD package, if you do "View Extents" (AC3D, "Fit All") it displays *everything* that is in the model, or the "extent" of the model. This is what I understand as the extents. In this case we are not talking about the extents of the whole plane, but rather (per Bryan) the closest lod...
Its been a while since I was in the CAD business but I doubt the definitions have changed.

This is, by the way the easiest way to find out if you mistakenly put a part of the model/lod so far out of place that you dont see it on the screen. Fit all and if the display of your model shrinks, there is a probably part out there where you didnt mean it to be....

Extents are just the smallest volume that can contain all of the points of a model.

In the case of SDOE there is a centre point which will be the geometric centre of the root model. The view distance is based on the furthest away vertices of the higest detail mesh of the entire aircraft. For example, if the distance between the vertice at the tip of the wing and the centre point was larger than the distance to any other point in the aircraft then this distance would be used as the view distance.

For the problems you are seeing it may be possible that there is a extranious vertice out in space somewhere that you can't see, or a hidden model out in space some where you can't see. I can't see how a extra vertice could get in there given the way OpenPlane meshes are put together, so look for a hidden model.

Huh?!?
I thought I said that (except for the hidden model part)
