I wondering if someone has any idea on how to model an ejection seat in SDOE. Would it be possible? Perhaps someone has already done that? The real J21 (which I´m currently trying to model) had one of the world´s first ejection seats so it would be cool to be able to implement that in my model. I haven´t come very far on it, but I just thought I´d ask this anyway.

Greetings/Robert

I'm no plane builder, but the therory sounds easy enough I think... and obdetach for the seat, small rocket boosters fitted to take it out..

Would this not be possible...
reprog the eject Func to
1 obDetach canopy,
2 obDetach seat,
3 Fire boosters,
4 "eject" pilot from seat.

Good idea Robert, I think it should be doable

Robert, I think it can be done like this:

1. detach canopy (see droptank-thread)
2. activate translational DOF that moves the seat upwards (this would be the rocket-sequence, see droptank-thread for technical things)
3. make the seat detach from aircraft through drag (very much like the airspeed-sensitive landing gear from Bjorn's cookbook)
4. seperate pilot from seat by pressing ctrl+J

I think that unless this can all be done under ctrl-j then it's fun to mess with, but pointless, realistically to make it usable by all rather than a hinderence it has to be the eject procedure.

Thanks for the tips!

It would be fun if one really could add a booster to the chair. On the real J21 it was a powder charge that ejected the chair with the pilot. But perhaps it´s simpler(?) to "just" change the 3d model for the ejected pilot, glue the chair to his behind so to speak . So he leaves just like usual, except that he´s sitting in a chair instead of standing(!), like he does now.
Of course then I guess he´ll be sitting there until he hits the ground. So that´s perhaps just a "halfway" solution.
Well first of all I have to make an aircraft that our dear test pilot can eject from...But it´s coming together.(I think)
But if someone else feels like it or already is working on it...Great.

Robert, Bob, Robbie, Robban!

Can you please post a few pics of how the J-21 is looking?
I'm thinking of starting on a J-29 after my current project.

Hehe put rocket rails in the cockpit. Make a new rocket type. Make the seat a child of the rocket. Make the pilot.sm a child of the seat. Add "rocket seat" to all the weapons loadouts. Launch rocket to escape from plane, CTL-j to escape from rocket

Could work.

Might not.

Robert,

Om du behöver några specialspecar på J21:an så kanske jag kan gräva fram dom i min egenskap av f.d guide på Flygvapenmuseum...

And a translation för non-Swedes :-)
If there's any special information neeeded on the J21, I might be able to get them sins I used to be a tour guide at Sweden's Air Force Museum.

Thanks for all the input!

Kraftwerk, I don´t know how to post pics here I´m afraid. But I´ve sent you some, so check your mail. If anyone else is interested just tell me...
If you do the J29 that would be great

Alexander!
Yes, I would need to know how much the different controlsurfaces moved, the flaps, ailerons and so. I have only pics, no numbers (degrees) on that. So if you have that I´d be very glad if you could send them to me.Tack.

Thanks och hälsningar/greetings from Robert

Spanky here...

I think that could be awsome. We could add it to some of the jets too.

I don't see the problem with having to do a 2 or 3 button sequence, I think that could be cool. We should HAVE TOO open the canopy to bail on the ww2 planes if ya ask me.

Jedi's idea sounds good too.

How about this idea...

Just make the seat a part of your pilot SM (stuck to his ass). Fix it so the canopy detaches when you hit CTRL-J (that is, if you can make an obDetach within a DOF... and if not, you can always have the canopy become hidden or disabled at the end of the DOF)
Then maybe mess with the pilot a bit to make him lighter and he should shoot up higher. I think Raider might have some insight on this one.

Didn't the "out of the box" pilot jump (eject) way too high until 1.5? Reverse engineer 1.5 and you have an ejecting pilot.
