I got this calculation using an eye doctor's eyechart. If you have 20/20 vision it says you should be able to see a 0.4 inch object at a distance of 20 feet.

Here is the formula:

distance(feet) = object size(feet)x 20 / .033333
switchin = distance x distance

See if this works.

However, just because a LOD switches in does not mean it is visible in SDOE. If it is a smaller part it may be less than 1 pixel in size, this would still be invisible.

I am really considering adding over-sized far distance LODS to my WWI planes so you can at least see a speck sooner...

I can make out planes at over 5 miles with HUD off.

After some testing I found out this is not going to work well in all cases because when you zoom in on an object, SDOE actually moves you closer to it instead of just enlarging the image.

I think dividing the calculated switchin distance by 2 works well.

No FS doesn't actually move you closer when you zoom in.

It does move the "apparent" distance closer so that higher level LOD's will switch in and you can see more detail. Objects between you and the plane you're looking at will continue to be in the way though.

MH,

Thanks, can you tell me how you calculate the apparent distance in relation to zoom? Right now I am doing this by trial and error.
