Allways the same problems ! The Pe got 4 flaps (2 inner, 2 outer). And they flicker ! Damn, I tried changing the polyflags, new vertex order/turning edges, flatten the flap poly (100% planar) etc. pp - nothing works. The darker upside of the flaps "shines" through the wing when you zoom out (like the low level lods on the I-16 or the freaking gunsight thinghs). The flaps on the lanc work the same way but without oscillating. I exported them, moved the vertexes and imported the flaps back to the pe2. Same result. I hate that ! Maybe its a problem with 3DS or MAX2OBJ converter or even OPS import or something. I dont know. But it eats up my time to make such stupid tests.SO I could need: A) modeller expert who knows the reason why my flaps dont look right or B) someone who can rebuild the flaps without MAX/3DS/OPS or C) working flaps in my mail ( ) LK

You could triangulate the flaps or cheat and make them double sided. Flickering usually is the sign of a non-coplaner polygon in SDOE.IP: Logged |

I find flickering happens when you have two surfaces too close together.. move them farther apart. Non-planar polys go invisible from certain angles on my system but they don't flicker. TS [This message has been edited by Tailslide (edited 04-15-2000).] IP: Logged |

But what causes them to flicker from some angles and turn invisible from others ?IP: Logged |

Laika,My best advise would be to export using MAX2OBJ as triangles, and forget about quads and polys until MAX2OBJ gets fixed, or someother export method comes to light. The hit FPS isn;t huge anyway, and so its really an optimisation step you can take latter. I think there is a fix for MAX2OBJ somewhere but the original version would have caused this problem using quad or poly export. IP: Logged |

Nonplanar polys that are too close together?

IŽll explain it better:Take a look on the Lancaster flaps, thats how the Pe-2 flaps should be. Move the Pe-flaps farther away from the wing object does not help much, except I move them 1 feet below their normal position, and this looks odd. Nonplanar polys - I tried the whole thing allready with perfect planar polys - no luck. And I exported them allways as triangles. IŽll post you a pic in 2 hours ! IP: Logged |

Hmmm - it seems IŽm a bit late I think I "fixed" the problem (mainly it was a mental problem, allways tried to fix the flaps wich where right..) : The black lines represent the wingpolys the red one the flap. The numbers are the polyflags I used (30 = 1-sided,subface nesting on (lowest level?), primary axis (normal) Z,solid filled ; 10 is the same with subface nesting off). It seems to work fine in SDOE, not in OPS - but as I know OPS didnt care about that subface thing ? Also I think it could be that the flags for the I16 lowlevellodsarewrongsomehowhahagrr, IŽll will test this later today ( it is like searching easter eggs somehow - much fun). Now IŽll take a walk into the forest, hunting the Easterhare (?) ! LK IP: Logged |
