Pe-2 Wings and Fuse are both half done (modelling). I checked the polycount - oups - all in all about 480 (no stabs, rudder, canopy, gear, etc.). I would say the both wings (with engines/props) will have about 350 triangles. The fuse will also have about 340-360 triangles. The rest could be about 200-400 tri´s. In the end close to 1200 tri´s (worst case), seems to much for me (the Ishak outside has 500 or so in high detail). The fuse is actually build up out of 10-sided cylinders, I could rebuild it with 8-sided cyl. but that would look a bit crappy.I could try to export most of the parts as quads. But it would be helpfull if you (the planebuilders) can tell me how many tri´s/verts whatever would be good for the Pe-2 and how much you´ve used on your plane. IP: Logged |

The BF109G's most detailed LODs has about 1000 polygons(not triangles). This is excluding the cockpit which you can not see if you are more than 5 feet away. The other versions of the 109s and the 190s ranges from 700 to 900 polygons. The Zero has about 750 polygons. IP: Logged |

Why triangles? You can cut your polycount in half by using quads.

I read that quads could make trouble sometimes. But 1000 tri´s should be possible (/2 =500). IP: Logged |

If the quads are not coplanar they may not be visible from some angles when viewed in SDOE.IP: Logged |

I think it is just the coolest thing that the weird green cigar thing in the pic Laika posted is going to be a plane someday. _sigh_ I can't wait!charm IP: Logged |

>If the quads are not coplanar they may not be visible from some angles when viewed in SDOE.This is correct, but I would add this... as long as the quad isn't way out of whack, you can get away with a certain amount of non-planarity (is that a word?). Very few quads on the P-47 are perfectly planar. [This message has been edited by JT (edited 04-05-2000).] IP: Logged |

1200 sounds quite reasonable for a bomber Laika ! It'll be great to get a FPS friendly bomber I'm glad you are being stingy with the polys. I agree with JT.. try for the quads it helps the frame rate a lot and I can't see much visual difference in my yak using quads or triangles. TS

LOD usage is, I think, even more important than watching your poly count. You can have a low poly plane that will still cripple the framerate if you don't use LODs. Imagine a plane that uses 500 polys... now put 10 of them on screen and you have a problem. One rarely has multiple planes on screen and very close, but when planes are far away, it's most often the case that you'll have many on screen at once. IP: Logged |

Hey JT - step by step - I allways start with the highest detail LOD´s. I plan to do 4 levels for this plane, so that high (or very high ) detail will only be shown when you´re extremly close (outside view etc.). Unfortunatly it is not posible to reduce the polys for the fuse by vertex welding, so I had to model the 2nd detail lod from scratch again. Much work ! So long LK IP: Logged |

Indeed much work... and texture mapping all those LODs is easily the most tedious and painful aspect of plane building... easily my least favorite aspect of Openplane.IP: Logged |

I texture map only the high detail lods, and before I weld them down to medium and low res I detach the single elements (different textured like "top of the wing" and "bottom of the wing" etc.). Now the mapping coordinates will not get lost. After that just attach...LK IP: Logged |

High detail LODs do make a big difference to frame rate .. try flying the B17 with the cockpit zoomed out while flying in formation

The "weird green cigar" looks slowly more like a plane ! Not ? Dont mind the wrong smoothing it is not finished yet ! I hope I will end with <=1000 faces (tri´s).
