OK Guys, had enough of messin about, if anyone wants to start a Terrain Project with me, mail me or post here, I'm going to start work today on a new texture map for a terrain, which I'm not sure yet, I would like to build a Pacific map (new a/c considered) but don't want to step on Jaguars toes since he's started that one. Still, new terrain is needed and I'm going to build the textures in anycase.

What I need is someone that can either.. 1 build the map model, or 2 flatten out areas of an exhisting map (likely to be the Africa Map).

Any takers let me know (one thing.. .building is NOT me thing, I can only use the crayons and felt tip pens lol)

Hiya Nat,

What a coinsidence! I just talked to Razer this afternoon about my ideas of creating a new terrain. I was planning to do a New-Guinea / Indonesia terrain. Note that this is not a pacific-like terrain, cause there are much more mountains in it and the islands are a little bigger. The Africa map would be perfect for this terrain. It already has a few islands. The only thing that has to be done is more higher mountains inland. And with mountains I mean mountains like the one in South-East Rhineland.

Reason why I came up with this idea is that the part of the Dutch airforce operated there, because Indonesia and all those little islands around there where all part of Holland at that time. The "Netherlands East-Indies" flew planes like the P-40N, B-25, C-47 and the PBY. Wouldn't it be just great to see this planes fly in such a scenery!!?? And I'm from Holland,... and this is my dream! Oh yeah!

Interested in starting this project together with me?

I'm also a rookie on editing terrain (except textures) so there still needs to be someone around who can "modell" the mountains...

Cya!

Hi there,
I've just produced a new texture for the Tundra terrain (see my posts in the WWI group)
I started to model a new mesh and it is a hell of a job (400 .lods for the tundra 700+ for the others) so I shelved the idea for a while.
I believe the terrain can be made much larger, the Tundra is only 40x40 miles.
Bryan Russell has been working on very large
terrains and has a small program for converting a dem file to a sm file.
If you need any help let me know

Actually I´m more a planebuilder, but if you ask for textures for terrains there is an incredible (freeware) program I worked with some time ago. Check this out:
http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/

With some tricks you can make nice topviews of any terrain map (or dem file), I think textures made with this program would be better than the textures that come with the shipped maps. My brother does more work with this program, I´ll ask him if he could make a topview to show you the results.

I´m very interested in a new map, but I would prefer the eastern front. I also think it would be good if someone starts to find out how map-making works, we could need a easy to use doc for this (and tools (DEM2LOD etc.) too).

BY ALL MEANS, STEP AWAY!

Feel free to use my Pacific map. I will help out as much and where ever I can. I can even send you the original super tiff if you wish. The islands are correctly proportional to eachother.......... well... except for midway.

I have some ideas on making phoro realistic terrain too, But I'm in kind of a hurry now ao I'll spill it later.

Good luck!

Has anyone looked at attempting to import EAW or F4 terrain?

What I have.... I have a fully textured Map, which right now includes 2 inslands both with working airstrips (AI can take off from them) This is a re-textured Africa map, so, the texturing is done... what I need.. is someone that can alter the model of the map, flattening outt he areas around one of the islands to see leval, and altering its properties to that of water. Right now it's about that the same stage as the one Jaguar created (only I think AI wont take of from yours Jag) meaning.. there is land and hills, they are puely re-textured, there is water there (obviously, it's Africa Terrain.

Later I'll be editing the SM file to remove the towns and airstrips that shan't be needed, oh and the pyraminds etc. Anyway, you get the idea. I hate to say it, but what I really need is someone to work the model. I don't think it's as hard as an a/c, but what do I know

Anyone want to do this, I'll send them what I have so far, it may help.

Thanks Guys

Ash, it seems that we both have the same problem, I'm already textured, only takes a couple of hours to do that.. my problem is the same as yours.. the model itself

My terrain is not currently acurate to anything, I was thinking of Pacific Islands, any small group actually. I'd love to do a true island like Midway.. but until someone actually agrees to put a model to a terrain I create, I'll just make a none acurate terrain that hould get some good use.

This is the look of the terrain so far, I may add some smaller isles in the area, but essentially this is it...

I still think we have to do that New-Guinea terrain. It's really quite different from a pacific scenery. I have a perfect picture of a painting showing a Dutch P-40 flying high above N-G/Indo terrain. The problem is that my scanner is out of biznes so I'll have to wait for a few hours and than scan that picture at a friend.
What you'll see on the picture is a bay that looks a bit like the bay in the Africa Terrain, only no Gabes Bridge. The terrain is much much much greener and there are more mountains. You'll all just have to wait untill I've scanned the picture and than you'll all see what I mean...

I had a dream last night... I saw a PBY coming in low above the N-G waters making a touch-down on the beautifull blue water. In the background I saw these beautifull mountains with white clouds high above them. AAAAAAAHHHHHHH....

I've recently (re?)purchased the OpenGL SuperBible (v2) and it was nice enough to ship with a CD containing 30 sec arc data for about 80 of the planet. I can't remember the specific name for the format, but it isn't DEM. There has been talk of this before, but nothing came of it - it was interrupted by the contest.

I'll see what I can do. I think there is enough info to conver the thing to textured .lod files. Hmmmmm....Cuba.....
