I'm interested in knowing if there is any interest out there in porting SDOE to Linux. From what I have read on this message board, it appears that Semi Open Source will only allow some of the source code of SDOE to be released and modified. Volunteer programmers would have access to all of the source code, but the NDA says they can only change and release as open source a portion of it. Now this may sound like Inertia is getting employees for free, but these programmers probably play this sim and they want to improve it. The result of this would be an improved SDOE for everyone, and the possiblity of anyone with the programming expertise to make future bug fixes and add features to the open source part. Something that is unlikely when it's up to the software vendor. Would it be possible that while this is going on, a group of programmers begin working on an open source combat flight sim for the Linux platform which will use Open Plane and the SOS code. This sim couldn't have the name of SDOE, but SOS would allow it to use Open Plane, and maybe even work with SDOE on line. There is only one open source flight sim for Linux, Flight Gear, www.flightgear.org, which is quite a ways along in development as a civilian flight sim. So if you want to shoot planes, but use Linux, you're out of luck. There could be a lot of Linux programmers out there willing to work on this project for that reason. A combat flight sim sounds a lot more fun than working on a mySQL database engine. These programmers may even go out and buy the Windows version of the game. IP: Logged |
