allowing people to modify the source code (with restrictions)

It's a scouring pad for when you have those dirty/greasy pots and pans.

SOS stands for Semi-Openplane-Source. I'm not a programmer so I can't say exactly what it is.
My interpretation is that Michael Harrison might or will open portions of the openplane source code so that programming gurus like Bryan Russell can reprogram those areas, thereby increasing the chances for this SDOE community to come under further scrutiny of people like Scharmers and other flight sims. It's not easy when you have a good thing.

I'm sure someone can explain it to you in more detail.

Spanky here...

From what i remember i think its kinda opensource but you have to submit an aplication to be part of it and actually see code and you also have to sign an NDA. You as a programmer and the company Inertia will both have rights and agree not to steal anything from each other. I would guess Inertia would buy or ask for anything they like for use in future sims. But thats a guess.

As far as i know opensource is regularly totaly open and the only limits on it is that you can't try to sell it as your own.

This is not fully open cause then Inertia would lose control of all its hard work.

Once again this is just what I think. Not fact.

BTW i'm not so hot on the SOS title. SOS is also the name for the group of people trying to get another Red baron done. Save Our Sim.
That to me makes it look like to outsiders that our sim is dieing. Which in my opinion its not.

How about XSC - eXperimental Source Code... oh wait, M$ has that on (tm)'d already... How about LOS - Limited Open Source or OPSOSP - Open Plane Semi Open Source Project or SOCECU - Semi Open Code Everyone Could Use or SECS - Semi Experimental Code Sourcing... ok, so I was trying to get SEX, but I couldn't do it....
