Spanky here.. Hi guys. Figured more out about texturing in Max. I can get my texture to show up when i render but thats the only time you see it. Is that how is always is? I'm looking all over for a switch so i can see the textures while i'm working but i can't find one. Also how am i going to texture somthing thats not just a square? right now it just slaps the texture onto the cube how ever it feels like it.

Hey, make sure the blueprint isn't getting stretched when you lay it down. You can do this a few ways...- make sure the blueprint is square and map it on to a square panel or... - use the "bitmap fit" button at the bottom of the UVW panel. This will force the gizmo to use the proportions of the texture you're laying down. or... - adjust the spinners so that they match the proportions of your texture IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Thanks for the tips man. What do you mean by spinners? "This will force the gizmo to use the proportions of the texture you're laying down." ?? force the gizmo? Which method do you use? IP: Logged |

Sorry, forget spinners... I meant just enter the proportions of the bitmap in the U and V value fields (near the center of the UVW panel). Enter 0 for the W field, since it's not used. The gizmo is the yellow rectangle that you use to manipulate the texture after you hit the Sub-Object button in the UVW panel. It is a wireframe representation of the boundaries of the texture and basically allows you to manipulate the texture using the transform and scale tools. When you use bitmap fit, the gizmo will proportion itself based on the proportions of the texture file you select from the dialogue that pops up. I usually only deal with square textures so I usually just enter the same values in the U and V value field, but sometimes I use the bitmap fit if I want to use the actual proportions of the bitmap in question. To see a texture on an object in a viewport, make sure you first right-click on the name of that viewport (i.e. Perspective). This will bring up a small menu - select 'Smooth + Highlights'. In the Material Editor, when looking at the material you want to see in the viewport, you will ordinarily see a small 'M' in one of the buttons alongside the Diffuse, Specular or Filter swatches. If you click on this 'M' button, you'll get another roll-out menu. At the top of this menu is a row of buttons - one of which looks like a cube with a blue&white chequerboard pattern. If you click on this, it will display whatever material map you have selected.Hope this helps. If anyone needs any more help, please ask - I use Max for 80% of my normal working day. ------------------ C/O Jagdgeschwader 5 'Eismeer' http://www.madasafish.com/jerry/jg5/ IP: Logged |

Spanky here... COol man thanks. 'Smooth + Highlights' I wish it would have been called smooth + highlights + textures then i would have seen it long time ago. BTW what do you do and do you have any tips for using a background image to work off? I tried it but it looks all messed up and i would rather do that then load a texture onto a polygon. I need to trace some splines to loft from. of a plan i have.

I'm a computer graphics artist (basically, I help make games for the PC - but no, unfortunately not flightsims ). As for getting an image to show in the background, I hope the following instructions help:There are 2 ways to do it, 1 that works just as a background in the viewport, and one that works both as a background in both the viewport and the render. I guess you're after the former. At the top of the Max screen, you'll see 'Views' - click on this, and you'll see 'Background Image'. Clicking on this will bring up a box, and to load up the image you want to display in the background, click on the 'Files' button. There are other choices in the box that you might want to consider, but make sure you have the 'Display Background' choice ticked. If it doesn't show up in whatever viewport you've chosen, right click on the viewports' name and select 'Show Background'. Hope this helps! ------------------ C/O Jagdgeschwader 5 'Eismeer' http://www.madasafish.com/jerry/jg5/ IP: Logged |
