Do the bombers make proper use of the gunners when defending themselves? It looks to me like there's never more than one gunner actually firing, the others seem to await their turn. Is it like this, or do I just have a skewed view?

I think the AI only aquires one target at a time.

to be honest when I've been in the B17, or watching it, it fired every gun that it could bring to bear.. thats if memory serves... think I'll have to have another look at this one.. the thing I do notice though.. is that they don't use up ammo like we do

Nat's right. Once a bomber has aquired a plane, every position that can, fires at it. I have a few screens of the whole side of a B-17 opening up on a FW.... looks pretty cool!

Yes, but I still think they only *target* one at a time. The left waist gun for example won't shoot at an enemy to the left while the other guns shoot at another enemy to the right. The bombers AI is built like the fighters and can thereby only engage one target at a time.

Thats anyway my impressions of the AI. It will be fun to see how it's done when we hopefully get hold of the code. I mean, how do you teach the AI to fly - what is flying? Can we write some code to improve the AI fighters gunning/leading shots abilities? Energy management? Boom 'n Zoom? That will be a nice little challenge to do.

You're correct. The AI only tracks one target for the entire plane.

Ok I was wondering about this but....
You know the way a lot of the pilot accounts talk about shooting out the tail gunner or belly gunner? Why can't this be done in SDOE?
You could make the tail gunner another part of the plane that can be blown off like the rudder and it would be really cool, ya know to silence that damn tail gunner!
What do you think?

OK, still on this targeting theme.. would it then be possible to assign each gun position it's own target aquasition (sp?) using the method that a flack cannon etc uses to aquire a target, rather than having it all tied together, it may still be that they all fire on the same target, but at least the AI has a fighting chance of then taking on more targets at once
