I am an online flyer, and a B-17 enthusiest. And i am stating that I know more about the b-17 than any of you. Plain and clear. This has come from years of admiration, and study of the gallant plane. I have gotten my hands on anything that i could find, and i know all the version differs. Ok, enough useless rambling. The b-17f is a poor representation of the REAL F model. Someone please take thought into the folowing: The tail turret should not be on the F, and the cheek windows should be staggered, pitot heads should be added, and most definately nose guns; they are the main representation of the F. A diffrent top turret frame for the F, it Changed greatly from the F to the G. Another important thing is paint schemes, none of the colors in sdoe are that close to the green olive drab, how about combat wear, like the black stains trailing from the engines, maybe some bullet holes, And discoloration of the fading control surfaces. The '17 also took alot more shit in real life than it does in sdoe, all you have to do is barely tap the wing between the fuselage and the No 2 and 3 engines and the wing flies off! Whats the deal with that?I know that this is just a game, but please people, the b-17 deserves better than a quick bang up job, it was a mighty plane in its day, and its apearance in sdoe isnt that close to what it should be. I know that their are people out there that are tired of hearing me bitch about things that could be better, and im sure alot of people are asking, why dont I do all these modifications, well, reason NO. 1 I dont have open plane, No. 2 I dont have open plane, No.3 I dont have open plane. Sorry to hound you makers out there, but obviously the b-17 is just a quick bang up job to you, but it means ALOT more to me. Those of you that agree with me, please support. Cue

Theres no such thing as openplane to have. Its like an API. Tools needed to build stuff in Openplane are readily available. http://www.fightersquadron.com/opstudio/ for bryan russel's openplane studio http://www.schoolmusic.com/chickencoop/se5a/index.htm for SV's excellent openplane notes. A link to hippie's tools is also there.I agree with you about the B17F. Its by no means a bad aircraft but it could be better. I also think, however, that if youre the expert you claim to be you should lend a hand in the work. IP: Logged |

Then i would suggest u download open plane, then hop into it with both feet. The tools are available and the guys have put tons of there own time to do what has been done so far. I have open plane,I also know that there is opps people as we speak doing the damgae models to make the dm on the planes better.I do agree with you that the bombers just go down way to easy, and it is the damage models and the flak loadouts also that need to be fixed.Get open plane it is there and hop into the opps group and help em out.IP: Logged |

I would love to help these guys out. Unfortunatly, i am not a person who has many plane making skills. I did not mean any offense to the plane builders out there, and sorry if you took it that way, great job with what you have done guys, damn good job. And ill take into consideration about helping them out. Hey, maybe ill design the F model the way it should be. Ill give it a try.IP: Logged |

Just don't expect to whiz through it overnight, whatever you make. It takes a long time to get the hang of all this, but once you do there is lots of fun to be had IP: Logged |

Everybody is a bit touchy recently. They are cramming for the contest . I'm worried that I won't have squat for it. It is nice that someone took the time to give the plane a once over, though.IP: Logged |

FPS already slows to a crawl with more than 3 b17s in formation.. adding more polygons is going to make it even worse I'd like simpler models and larger bomber formations.

Heya BBC...it was fun flying with you last night. I'm posting here because you have me quite puzzled...in your first post, you say the tail turret should not be on the F and that it should have nose guns....but every picture of the F I have shows exactly the opposite- a tail gunner in turret and no nose guns. Could you please clarify?IP: Logged |

jeeves, the very first f models, and trainers, didnt have nose guns,im confused about your second question but ill give it a go. What i mean by it doesnt have a tail turret is that, in the early e and f models , there were guns poking out the back, through a hole covered by canvas, no turret. The B-17g had a swivel tail turret,(and the non turret only with early g models) and with the turret came a stubbier tail. Hope i answered your question. CueIP: Logged |

BBQ, if you had been hanging around here since the beginning you would know that our "F" was one of the very first, if not the first, attempt to use Openplane to modify a shipped plane - by removing the chin turret. It was not an attempt to create a complete "F" model, but it broke new ground.Which brings me to my question for you. If you are such a B-17 fanatic where have you been? A lot of us started following this sim two years before it came out just waiting for a B-17 we could fly. A lot of us bought it only because it had a flyable B-17. How could the world's self-described B-17 expert not be active on this board and with this sim since day one? If all you want to do is bitch about something you know nothing about then fuck-off and don't expect your new squad to grow much. If you want to be a part of something which is great and getting greater then you will find a lot of good friends here. It's your choice. IP: Logged |

AGAS 5 steps on his soap box......This message has been edited. Previous comments were made in good faith. I just had a look at his other post and now tend to agree with some of the comments above. Cheers, AGAS 5 [This message has been edited by AGAS - 5 (edited 03-02-2000).] IP: Logged |
